Encore Question of January 30, 1999.
Played at The Frog & Firkin in North York.

Answers:

  1. Bus Stop
  2. Stop Stop Stop
  3. Carrie-Anne
  4. On A Carousel
  5. Look Through Any Window

Tonight I'm playing with just BERGIE at the bar as the regulars have gone off to a table about halfway through the SunSports trivia game. One thing I've forgotten tonight is my microcassette recorder so the details of what other players score is sketchy. I have a good lead over 2nd place ENIGMA with 22480 to 19504.

My game so far has gone like this:
Tune-Up...5000/5000....1st/13 (2 way tie)....with BERGIE.
On-Beat...10750/14000....1st/13...MOLSON wins round and has 10500.
JukeBox...15956/20000....1st/12...I win that round.
Triviaoke...22480/28000....1st/11...I win that round.

I put the maximum 50% of my points on the line for this question which is obviously about The Hollies as all five answers are songs they've done...

Question:...What was the first US Top 10 hit for The Hollies?

Well no problem for me as I think back to reading an article about 20 years ago at my mother's friend's house in an old boy scout magazine from about 1965 which was tipping The Hollies off as going to be the next big group out of England. Strange I thought of that before a web page I came across in 1997 about The Hollies when I heard some DJs dissect the lyrics to 'Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress' and wanted to get the lyrics for myself. It's at http://www.cae.wisc.edu/ ~gansler/hollies/hollies.htm I've written to the webmaster Bob Gansler before and confirmed his father was the coach of the United States national soccer team back in the 1980s. I had enough time to send him a Toronto Lynx soccer program before Father's Day that had an archive photo of his dad playing a game in Toronto. I only own one Hollies record and that is their Greatest Hits on a vinyl LP. OK I should say I've pressed in '1' while writing down the question and tipped off BERGIE. I make sure the 'regulars' table has it right but that isn't too difficult for their music buffs.

Correct Answer:....1. Bus Stop

I'm right and win with 33720 points. I'm surprized that's good enough for 7th on the Network Top 20 and 13th overall of all players in North America as I didn't have a great OnBeat round. The bar is 8th in North America with a 29116 average. I earn 3000+ Players Plus points for meeting the standard (wasn't looking at the beginning of the game to find out what it was). I make 9th on the bar's Top 10 Playback Hall of Fame and displace my 10th place score as I held both 9th and 10th before this game. I don't have the individual scores for the other players but the top 8 were correct for this question and 9th to 11th were wrong.

From the NTN website our bar's other Top 100 positions were:
ENIGMA.........29256............67th
MOLSON........28734............79th

The American order of these five songs and chart position were:
Look Through Any Window......32
Bus Stop.......................................5
Stop Stop Stop.............................7
On A Carousel.............................11
Carrie-Anne...................................9

I'm on my walk home before wondering about the timing of this question. This is the week of the 40th anniversary of the death of Buddy Holly and maybe the quizmaster was looking up a question about this. Also there was a JukeBox question about Jennifer Holiday who was in the Broadway musical 'Dream Girls' that I was the only player who got 1000 points for this question. Hmm Jennifer Holliday, The Hollies, Buddy Holly...just about alphabetical order in my music book.

Other games:
8:00pm...Countdown...8668/15000...4th/7...I'm 3054th in North America...bar is 712th...I earn 1000+ Players Plus points...BERGIE wins. (getting here before the 5th question would have helped my score).
8:30pm...Countdown...11840/15000...1st/11...I'm 112th in NA...bar is 515th...I earn 2000+ points. (this game put me to 701,000 points so only 49,000 more before changing plus colour).
9:00pm...Wipeout...9655/15000...2nd/12...I'm 1834th in NA...bar is 519th...I earn 1000+ points...NICK wins.
9:30pm...SunSportsCountdown...9673/15000...1st/14...I'm 11th on Southern Ontario Network Top 20, 12th overall of about 462 players...bar is 1st with an 8773 average...(we still miss Jeff LEAFAN)...a player named HYBRID has a perfect score up in Richmond Hill and I wonder if he wrote the questions. You can't just be a 'big' sport expert as there's always some questions about women's soccer or freestyle skiing.
