Media Coverage of Soccer In Toronto

I'd like to eventually list every channel that has local team soccer coverage in the Toronto area. Anyone with any help on this please e-mail me.

Updated February 25th, 2001.

I've given up on tracking all the soccer coverage in Toronto that involves non-Canadian leagues as there's too much to keep track. Cable and satellite services make it easy to see something almost every day.

CTV Sportsnet:
This station has 30 minutes of news involving the Canadian National teams and Canadian A-League franchises. It comes on between the two English Premier League soccer games on Saturday. Tune in from 12:00pm to 12:30pm.

The station also has scheduled at least three Toronto Lynx games this season:
Sunday May 27th Lynx vs Rochester (4pm)...game will be shown at 8:00pm.
Friday June 15th Lynx at Montreal
Friday July 6th Lynx vs Vancouver (7pm)

CKVR (channel 3 in Barrie). "The New VR"
Direct Kicks
Sunday mornings at 9:00am for 30 minutes.
A magazine show that covers the Toronto Lynx and amature soccer in the local area. Some world hi-lites but contains many interviews with Lynx players, minor league children and parents even referee profiles! Host is Scott Granville. Since the fall of 2000, it has been just playing reruns except for a two minute per show clip of Toronto Thunderhawk indoor league player profiles.

THE FAN AM590 radio
Sports news and talk.
Saturday afternoons 4pm to 6pm. Only seems to mention the National team. Other sports covered include rugby, cricket and Formula One. Lindsay O'Connor and Pete Irvine are the anchors with lots of field reporters and interviews.

They broadcast live the Toronto Thunderhawks NPSL indoor league games. In the summer they will mention the Lynx scores on their sports updates for a few hours after the games.

Other Media ie Newspapers The daily papers have almost nothing on the local scene. We can't complain about the papers not having coverage of soccer because they do but, except for Canada's Internationals, it's what I call 'lazy soccer'. They just pick scores off the wire service so lucky us get to see scores from ALL OVER the world including places like Australia and Honduras yet maybe one paragraph of the Toronto Lynx and the A-League standings. This is what got me irked enough to start this WEB page! The Toronto Sun was the most consistant in having a reporter at the Lynx home games. Michael Koreen did a great job in getting stories out as did Neil Davidson working for Canada Press. 2001 and I'll keep you posted on the newspaper coverage when the outdoor season starts.

Inside Soccer (Informing and Entertaining the Canadian Soccer Community) is published every two months and covers the national team down to the provincial and regional level. This can be bought at the newstands or by subscription.
