Subject: CNSL Toronto Italia vs Scarborough Astros

Here are my comments on the Canadian National Soccer League (CNSL)
game between Toronto Italia and Scarborough Astros played Monday
September 4th, 1995 at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium 8pm. This was
considered a League game.

8 Ralph Golen 9 Igor Ciric

subs 22 Patrick Bradley (GK) 12 Tony Morrison 13 Goran Gubic 15
Peter Firebrace 16 Velamir Criljen

Scarborough Astros (yellow socks and shirts, blue shorts and numbers)

			1 Paulo Silva

13 Audley Taffe 9 Laszlo Martonfi

subs 12 Fiorin Oprea (GK) 14 Ednie Taveres 16 Kevin Galindo 20
Alim Rajan 21 Rick Titus

referee was Gord Arrowsmith. Crew was talking to some of the
spectators before the game. Didn't get the linewoman's name but she
had a brutal game; not only ridden by the crowd for some questionable
offside calls but by Arrowsmith himself blowing down some offsides she
missed.
1st half

1.50 min Astro yellow to Marshall for obstruction?
2 min Harapyn caught badly out of goal, Astro gets by him and slips
shot from bad angle, sliding defender deflects ball off post. Harapyn
recovers to grab rebound.

6 min Silva punches out Maradona corner.
7 min Hanna? for Astros blasts shot from 10 yards off goalie's hand
who tips it onto top of crossbar. DeLeon had beaten defender Mazza to
set up this play.

17 min Italia Ciric slides ball wide of net as some confusion as
Italia player injured at 40 yard line.

30 min Maradona chip free kick from 30 yards lobs over to Golen who
hits side of net.

32 min Italia GOAL Ciric (2nd of season) taps in cross by Palmitta
near right of goalline about 25 yards along line. Low cross through
three Astros.

40 min Italia sub Firebrace replaces Golen who acted like he was cut
as two players slid for ball.

44 min Maradona crosses to Firebrace who crosses to Ciric who slides
one wide.

45 min Maradona and Maxwell both try to kick bouncing sitter at same
time but ball goes over net.

2nd Half

48 min Italia yellow Mazza for hard tackle.

54 min Astro corner headed up by Kraemer allows goalie to catch it.

57 min Astros sub Titus replaces Taffe

59 min Espinosa blasts free kick over net from 20 yards.
62 min Hanna blasts indirect free kick over net from 20 yards.

73 min Italia yellow Ciric for late tackle on ankle of defender who
took ball away from him 20 yards downfield.

74 min Ciric crosses to charging Firebrace who blasted ball into
sliding Astro goalie.

76 min Astros sub Taveres replaces Espinosa

78 min Astros Martonfi or Hannah slides ball into outside of
goalpost.
81 min Astros Nardi clips Ciric but (advantage) pass gets ball tapped
into net however Arrowsmith calls it back. Freekick wasted.

87 min Astro GOAL Taveres (3rd of year) heads in long cross from
DeLeon. Header was knocked in from 5 yards in crowd. 35 yard cross
from right wing. Astros had tried this all night.
87.30 Italia goalie makes point blank save to save tie.

Final Score Toronto Italia 1
	 Scarborough Astros 1
Attendance 300 to 400. This was Labour Day, the night before school
starts. Some of the Argentinian fans have come back to watch and
cheer Raul Lalo Maradona (brother of someone a lot more famous).

In the standings, the tie puts Italia in first place in the league
with two games in hand on London City. Scarborough somewhat wastes
another game in hand. Quick league standings, this is a ten game
session. FIFA 3-1-0 scoring

			Games Points

Toronto Italia 7 14
London City 9 13
St Catharines Wolves 5 10
Toronto Jets 5 7
Scarborough Astros 5 5
Hamilton White Eagles 7 4

The most important trophy is given out for finishing first. There is
also another trophy awarded to the winner of a Top 4 knockout playoff.
(3rd trophy is for the 10 game CUP competition. Top 2 play a home and
home final for it).

Next game I should be at will be Thursday at Esther Shiner Stadium for
the Jets vs Italia league game.
