Newsgroups: rec.sport.soccer

Here is the result of the Canadian National Soccer League (CNSL) game
played Monday July 3rd, 1995 at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium. It was
considered a 'League Game' between the Toronto Italia and St
Catharines Wolves.

Toronto Italia (blue socks and shirts, white shorts and numbers)

			22 Roman Harapyn
2 Goran Bakoe 4 Richard Alexander 6 Franco Vaiano 3 Franco Spadafina
7 Edward Rimmiceanu 5 Rick Titus 10 Lalo Maradona 8 Miguel Ferreira
9 Vladimir Kowal 11 Ryan Gamble

St Catharines Wolves (white socks and shirts, red shorts, black
numbers, red and black diamonds on sleeves)

			1 Lee Burrows
4 Joe Belan 13 Lucio Ianiero 3 Maciver Brooms 2 Tony Carbonaro
7 Chris Handsor 6 Shane Campbell 5 John McNeil
10 Tom Bernardi 9 Paul Moores 11 Carlo Archittu

ref was Manuel Parlano (sp?) who was a stickler for taking freekicks
and throwins from the proper spot even if the ball was already played.

1st half
at least 4 corners to Italia and 3 to Wolves within the first 9
minutes. Each side must have had a dozen by the time the game was over.

21 min Yellow card to Italia Bakoe for bodycheck on Handsor from 20
yards out.

28 min GOAL Wolves. Moores takes long cross about 30 yards across
field to charging Campbell who heads it in from about 3 yards.

29 min Yellow Wolves. Moores for slamming down Bakoe.

41 min Italia sub. 14 Tony Morrison replaces Kowal.
42 min ref spends three minutes chewing out coach on Wolves bench.
Team benches are on the opposite side of the field from the stands.
That's true of the Jets game too and the reverse of the CSL and APSL
teams that have played there in the past. I think it makes sense to
cut down on the coaching from the stands of some loudmouths. I don't
know what they were argueing about. Maybe the coach was asking why the
sprinklers didn't suddenly come on like they did at the CUP game three
weeks ago.

First half had good motion up the field but both teams couldn't get
that last pass or shot off to finish a good effort.

2nd Half

51 min Wolves sub 15 Jamie Perfetti replaces Archittu

56 min GOAL Wolves. Harapyn bobbles free kick, defenders clear it but
Moores boots it in from 15 yards out through a crowd.

57 min GOAL Italia. Maradona (4th of season) takes long time to take
free kick but ball spins off four man wall into net from 25 yards out.

60 min Italia sub. 12 Dennis Drasich replaces Rimmiceanu.

76 min Wolves sub. 12 Adrian Prenc replaces Carbonara.

79 min Italia sub. 15 Omer Patrick Tobo replaces Titus.

79 min GOAL Wolves. Moores taps in ball after Italia defender dekes
one forward but can't get past second one on the sideline. First
forward picks up ball and runs 15 yards towards goal even with the
five yard line before passing to Moores. (Moores second of night).

80 min GOAL Wolves. Harapyn comes well off line, Handsor has open net
to shoot at after ball centered to him.

82 min Italia sub. 13 Nick Maxwell replaces Drasich.

2nd half Italia starts to press in last 30 minutes and leave
themselves undermanned in the back.

Surprized to see the players hug and handshake so much after a game
like this.

Final Score St Catharines 4 Toronto Italia 1
In six games, I've seen the home team Italia or Jets lose
four times!

Notes: The Maradona fans...those with the Argentina banner to unfurl
and the drums to beat who were stationed on the other sideline but
moved into the stands for the last game were nowhere to be seen last
night. Of course it was at the earlier Wolves game where some of these
fans threatened a Wolves player who'd just been red carded for
flattening Maradona so maybe the league ordered no special treatment
for them anymore. With the stands without them we could listen to Wolve
lady toot her bicycle horns (made a sound like an antique car horn) and
blow a duck whistle for any blooper plays. She was pitted against an
Italia girlfriend/family member just shouting "Come on Ryan (Gamble)"
the whole 90 minutes.

Attendance was about 700 (my estimate)...best crowd of the year and on
a rather cold summer night at the end of the Canada Day weekend too!

I could see that some of visiting fans/family had St Catharines Roma
jackets on (a carry over from last year). That would make three of
the six teams Italia, Wolves, and Jets ethnic-Italian in nature. I'll
have to type out that report on the CISL league in Toronto where there
is no hiding ethnic heritage. Hey if it wasn't for this support,
there'd be NO support for (spectator watched) soccer in this city.
