SUBJECT:CNSL Toronto Jets vs Scarborough Astros
Newsgroups: rec.sport.soccer
Here is my summary of the Thursday June 22, 1995 Canadian National
Soccer League (CNSL) game between Toronto Jets and Scarborough Astros
played at the Jets home Esther Shiner Stadium in North York. This
game was considered a Cup match.
Toronto Jets (blue socks, shorts, shirts, white stripe at chest
level runs down sleeve, black numbers (hard to see from a distance))
1 Joe Ciaravino
2 Emanoele Caroonara 5 Robert Vacca 6 Tom Perks 3 John Annissi
4 Lino Solomita 7 Garvin Houston 8 Orlando Rizzo 11 Marco Antonucci
9 Michele Gioia 10 Robert Marcucci
Scarborough Astros (yellow socks and shirts, blue shorts and numbers)
1 Paolo Silva
7 Alex Nardi 18 Michael Marshall 3 Rene Martin 19 Kerwin Skeete
13 Audley Taffe 8 Gad Espinosa 10 Basil Hanna 5 Leo Lopez
9 Lazlo Martonfi 11 Gary DeLeon
ref Martman(?)
1st half
12 min Astro Yellow card to Hanna. not sure why but ref came running
to midfield from a long way off.
21 min Jets Yellow card to Marcucci for clipping Espinosa
Jets lose throw in for throwing ball from white football
sidelines instead of soccer yellow line one yard further out. Yikes,
this is the home team too!
26 min Astro yellow to Skeete for running into Vacca(?) like a truck
at midfield.
39 min Solomita is down at the Astro 45 yard line absolutely
screaming. I'm not sure if it was his leg or face that was injured.
45 min Astro yellow Lopez for knocking down Houston although looked
like Houston fell over him.
There must have been at least eleven offsides called against the Jets.
2nd half (hack, chip, and chop for 1st 10 min)
Jet sub 14 Vince Cancelliere for Houston at halftime
~50 min Astro 2nd yellow card to Lopez for knocking down Jet player.
Gee what a temper. The crowd had stood for a moment of silence for
Lopez at the beginning of the game as requested by the announcer
(tinny accoustics and heavily accented voice meant I couldn't
understand why). There was also another yellow card given out on the
same play by ref but I couldn't see to who or the reason for it.
54 min Jets yellow Solomita for kicking player
55 min Astro GOAL Deleon gets pass 15 yards out, takes shot from 8
yards ignoring decoy player to his right, shoots to far left corner.
59 min Jets GOAL pinpoint pass works its way to Gioia in open on far
left side of net 10 yards out, takes shot to open right side of net
along the ground.
62 min Jets sub Antony Zanini replaces Antonucci
66 min Jets sub 16 Jack Zamparelli replaces Gioia
71 min Jets yellow then red for knocking down defender near Astro
goal line.
71 min Astro sub 14 Ednei Tavares replaces Taffe
~75 min Astro gets throwin called back for standing on the football
lines.
80 min Astro player hurt in a melee, has very serious leg injury.
85 min Astro sub 17 Chris Ladelfi replaces injured Nardi (if it was he
that was injured).
86 min Jets miss goal in goal mouth scramble that was probably harder
to miss than score.
89 min Astro GOAL Ball passed back from goal line Astro player
steps over it, DeLeon slides it in. Carvelles gets the goal.
92 min Astro yellow Nardi for knocking down player 35 yards out.
Hmmm. That would prove that Nardi wasn't substituted.
95 min Astro GOAL DeLeon runs from 55 yard line even with the right
goalpost out-running one defender chasing him and shooting from 10
yards out to far left corner. DeLeon's second goal of the night. He
was announced as CNSL player of the week on AM radio The Fan 590 this
(Sunday) morning.
Final score Toronto Jets 1 Scarborough Astros 3
Attendance estimated by me as 400 people
I haven't been to this stadium in three years. That was the last year
of the North York Rockets of the CSL. The Rockets then played in the
CNSL two years ago, and joined the APSL for last year and played
at Centennial Stadium then folded this spring.
It was announced in the press that the York University football team
was getting it's own stadium closer to the school but the lines were
drawn and it caused two throw ins to be called back. At least it made
it easier for me to estimate the position of shots taken.
At the entrance of the stadium is a narrow strip of hydro fields (a
place where the transmission lines are strung between towers) which
stretch for miles. I could see four games going on in the distance
when I arrived and on the way out, an under 18 game going on under the
one field with lights.
I posted the CNSL standings yesterday. The Toronto Star posted the
league and cup standings for the first time this season. There's
looked the same as my own compilation. They missed Fridays result just
like me but as announced on The Fan 590AM as CUP game London City 0 St
Catharines 2 in London. That's a perfect 4 games 12 points in Cup
action for the Wolves so there's some space beginning to open up
between teams.
