CNSL Toronto Jets vs St Catharines Wolves

Here are my comments on the Canadian National Soccer League (CNSL) game
played Sunday October 1st, 1995 between the Toronto Jets and St
Catharines Wolves played at North York's Esther Shiner Stadium at
2:30pm.  This was considered a League game.

Both teams had played 8 of their 10 games.  Wolves were in 1st
place with 19 points, Jets had 14 and were in 3rd place.  Finishing
first wins the championship trophy.  Both teams have clinched a top 4
finish which leads to a knockout competionship for a different trophy.

There were no intros nor national anthem as there was no sound system in
the pressbox.  Actually Adrian (from the league) called me up from my
seat in the stands to help out spotting for his stats.

Attendance was only 50 (fifty) people with about half travelling Wolves
fans. As no announcement was made at Thursday's game about the team even
playing, I'm not surprised!!!  I've got some inside stuff from talking
at the Astros game but I'll save that to my next post.

1st half  Jets defend east goal in first half running into bright sun.
Strong wind from the south.  It was a great warm Fall day to watch
soccer.

Wolves start very sloppy as they just can't seem to clear the ball.

9 min  Jets Zanini heads wide as goalie clears right at him from 5
yards.
10 min Wolves Prence injured when clipped.
12 min Wolves Arghitto high header caught by goalie after Ianiero free
kick crosses to box.
13 min Jets header cross saved by goalie.
15 min Jets GOAL  ball rolls through a crowd to Jet Houston (5th goal of
year) who boots it from centre 7 yards out to high top right corner.
19 min Wolves Yellow card to goalie Perri for dissent.
20 min Wolves McNeil stops ball chest high on line after goalie beaten
15 yards out in crowd of players.
24 min Wolves Handsor takes 25 yard shot from right of net that goalie
grabs on dive to left.
27 min Jets Marcucci takes shot from 20 yards just high.
28 min Jets goalie tips shot off hands into his left post on hard shot
from right side.
34 min Jets Yellow card for kicking ball after whistle.
36 min Jets Marcucci chips shot 15 yards to goalie's hands.
42 min Jets Alexander boots high from 35 yards.
43 min Jets Cancelliere boots right at goalie.
44 min Jets Houston injured in ball hitting him in head as Alexander
kicks away rebound in own crease.
45 min Jets Marcucci receives ball from corner and takes shot straight
through crowd but ball tipped wide by defending Broomes.

2nd half
47 min Wolves Ianiero takes header after Moore crosses but ball caught
by goalie.
47 min Jet goalie catches cross from Bernardi.
49 min Wolves RED CARD to Moore for running over Perks who cleared ball
off his shins 20 yards out to right of goal.  Ooo, that seemed harsh.
58 min Jets Rizzo wide on left passes to Zomparelli but weak shot saved
by goalie diving to right.
59 min Jets Houston goes down in crash of players.
62 min Jets sub  Ferraira replaces Rizzo.
63 min Jets Ferraira cuts ball in to Marcucci and ball goes off goalie's
hands.
63 min Wolves GOAL  cross that Arghitto shoots in from 3 yards.  Jets
goalie injured on the playe.
63-66 min no action as Ciaravino still down.  Finally carried from field
with players protecting his leg.  Aiudi comes in as replacement.  He
wears a regulation keepers uniform but the yellow pattern make it look
like he's wearing a life jacket!
67 min Jets GOAL  Zanini from 15 yards out and 10 yards to his left of
net bounces in shot to left post.  Goalie is about 10 yards out
trying to check Zanini.  Wolves McNeil leg splits around goalpost trying
to keep ball out. Ouch!
69 min Jets Ferraira takes hard shot from 20 yards about two feet off
ground.  Goalie tips wide of left post.
76 min Wolves Ianiero takes snaking shot high that goalie has to tip
over bar.
77 min Jet sub Tounie replaces Marcucci.
79 min Wolves Broomes puts too much twitch on his header and ball goes
over right corner of bar.
81 min Wolves goalie gets hand on Tournie's dribble.
89 min Jets GOAL  Tournie springs Zanini free with through ball that he
lofts high to top right corner from 15 yards out with goalie 7 yards out
of net.  (Zanini scores his 2nd goal of game and 2nd of season)
89 min Jets sub  Fioccola replaces ???????
90 min Wolves goalie makes diving save on Tournie.
        (Wolves were getting burned in the defense the last 20 minutes
as they pressed for an equalizer).

Final Score   Toronto Jets          3
              St Catharine Wolves   1

The result causes Jets to leapfrog over Toronto Italia into 2nd place
and holds off Wolves clinching first place because the Jets can still
catch them with one game to go.

I now drove across town to Scarborough to see the Astros vs London City
game at 6pm......but that's my next post!
