Subj: CNSL Toronto Jets vs Scarborough Astros Monday August 28, 1995

Here are my comments are about the Canadian National Soccer League
(CNSL) game at Esther Shiner Stadium at 8pm between the Toronto Jets
and Scarborough Astros.  This was considered a league game.

NOW THINGS ARE GOING TO BE A BIT DIFFERENT THIS TIME!!!!!  The first
thing is that I didn't know there would be a makeup game from the
other games I've been to.  On Sunday mornings Soccer Canada program
they announced that the Toronto Italia would be playing Toronto Jets
on Monday night.  OK I remember going out to Centennial Stadium and
the game was rained out so this is when they'd play their makeup
game. Strange thing was that Italia would be scheduled to play Wolves
in St Catharines the next night.  I went out their and the woman sold
me a ticket (I got a refund) but it turned out it wasn't a CNSL game
but a OSL game (even lower calibre). There was a father and son there
who were also waiting to get in.  The stadium entrance was still
closed. When I asked at the management office they confirmed that no
CNSL game was there. Feeling I'd wasted my time I drove somewhat out
of my way to go to a computer store but found that the store wasn't
open Monday night. There was a break in traffic so I thought I'd turn
down Bathurst and look at the marquis outside Esther Shiner Stadium
to at least confirm there'd be a game Thrusday night....but imagine
my surprise when I saw a game in progress and when got inside found
that it was a CNSL game between Toronto Jets and Scarborough Astros
being watched by about 200 people (actually double last weeks crowd
but this was a derby match). There's no English language newspaper
coverage nor tv except Italian language sports news that sometimes
has hilights.  If I can't rely on the radio show Sunday morning what
can I expect.  One thing coming 40 minutes into the first half is
that the cashbox and ticket takers had vanished so I got in free.

Anyway the lineups were:

I came in at the 40th minute just in time to see an onfield brawl but
I got the opening comments form Adrian someone who does some league
work.
Jets goal 17th minute..."Jets scored on a beautiful cross from John
Annisi to newcomer Thomas Kapouranisi who headed it in, his first of
the season.
Laszlo Martonfi shot on a free kick that appeared to be a perfect
goal but Joe Ciaravino made a spectacular diving stop to rob him of
his 10th goal of the season.  Laszlo could only shake his head in
disbelief".

Jets held 4-3 shot advantage in 1st half.

45 min  Jets Yellow  Ferraira for bodychecking Nardi out of bounds.
2nd Half

50 min Jets GOAL  Ferraira (3rd of year) hits powerful volley to
short right side of goal from 10 yards out.

52 min Astros Yellow  Silva the goalie gets it for running to
sideline to complain about not getting goalie's ball.

53 min Jets Yellow  Antonucci for kicking ball away when Astros win
free kick at midfield.

55 min  Astro goal called back after they take free kick while
injured Jet is still being attended to.

56 min  Jets subs   Rizzo replaces Antonucci
                   Cancelliere replaces Kapouranisi

57 min  Astros GOAL  Martonfi on free kick curves banana shot over
three man wall and under centre of crossbar from about 25 yards out.

~59 min  Astros sub  Czslij replaces Espinosa
                    Doria replaces Taveres

64 min  Jets yellow  Marcucci for blocking goalie's free kick.

67 min  Astros free kick from 30 yards goes over 4 Jet-1 Astro wall
over net.
68 min  Jets goalie stops bullet shot from DeLeon? hit right at him.
68 min  Jets sub  Zanini replaces Marcucci.

71 min  Jets Ferreira hits shot about 1 yard wide after taking back
pass from goalline.

89 min  Jet goalie punches out long crossing freekick in crowd.
91 min  Jet goalie gets pushed into net as stampede heads for high
through ball.  Down for about two minutes.

Final Score  Toronto Jets         2
            Scarborough Astros   1

This game was chippy and rough.

My next game will be on Thursday at Esther Shiner Stadium to see
Toronto Jets vs Toronto Italia.  Yes that's confirmed.
