CNSL August 24th

Subj: CNSL Toronto Jets vs St Catharines Wolves
Conf: U-SOCCER (4241)

Here are my comments on the Canadian National Soccer League (CNSL)
game between the Toronto Jets and St Catharines Wolves played
Thursday August 24, 1995 at 8pm at Esther Shiner Stadium. This was
considered a CUP game.

The referee was the star of the game. Noone in the pressbox had his
name.

St Catharines Wolves (white socks and shorts, red shorts, black
numbers)
                       1 Lee Burrows
5 John McNeil 3 McIver Brooms 12 Adrian Prenc 2 Tony Carbonaro
10 Tom Bernardi 13 Lucio Ianiero 6 Mark Konert 14 Gary McGuchan
11 Carlo Arghitto 7 Chris Handsor

subs 9 James Perfetti 8 Clay Holmes 20 Eddie Curcio

Toronto Jets (blue socks, shorts, and shirts, black numbers, white
hoop around chest running down sleeve)

                       1 Joe Cancelliere
3 Johnny Annisi 4 Richard Alexander 5 Tom Perks 11 Marco Antonucci
15 Tony Zanini 7 Garvin Houston 2 Miguel Ferraira 8 Orlando Rizzo
10 Roberto Marcucci 9 Ryan Gamble

subs 13 Vincenzo Cancelliere 16 Lino Solomita 6 Jack Zamparelli
14 Luigi Fioccola 12 Aldo Aiudi

1st half

6 min Jet long throw in from 3 yard line headed into goalmouth
results in scramble and save.

23 min Jet yellow Marcucci for late tackle on McNeil in offensive
zone.
29 min Referee missed Wolve taking hard shot on his own net which
goalie caught and cleared.

44 min Jet pass squeezes through and just shot high.

2nd half
Halftime subs Jets Zomparelli replaces Gamble
              Wolves Perfetti replaces Konert

69 min Jets sub Cancelliere for Zanini

73 min Wolve goal called back for offside at 3 yard line.

78 min Wolve goalie saves 30 yard clear breakaway on Cancelliere.
80 min Jets yellow Cancelliere when he complains to linesman and
linesman whines to referee. (linesman calls goalie's ball from width
of field as Marcucci doodles along goalline). How could he see the
play when he'd have the net and players to see through?

82 min Jets sub Solomita replaces Marcucci

84 min Jets get two yellow card Perfetti knocks Solomita out of
bounds near concrete track, Solomita gets yellow for dissent. Rizzo
gets a yellow card also for dissent.

Now save all the game excitement for the game's last five minutes:
89 min Jets defender clears on line.
Jets goalie makes diving catch on cross.
      Wolve goalie makes big save.
ref blows whistle with no injury time added.

This was a cool night, glad I took a warm jacket. As I said, the ref
and crew were the stars of this game.

Attendance was about 100 people. Hey it wasn't that cold. Why is
attendance going down?

Final score Toronto Jets 0
             St Catharines Wolves 0
This result leaves both teams in second place with 14 points but Jets
have a game in hand. Scarborough has clinched first and the race for
2nd is all that's important to clinch the other place for the CUP
final series. Now the league is another story...I'll have to put off
posting the standings for a few days as I was unsure of one result.

The next game for me is Monday with a rescheduled game at Centennial
Stadium between Toronto Italia and Toronto Jets. They didn't even
announce this at the last Italia game. It was on today's Soccer
Canada broadcast AM590 The Fan.

Your comments are welcome and deserve me answering. I've fallen
behind in your requests. I've got to get those Parma programs to
mail to Basil. I've got to scrounge some old mags for the 1990
Western conference CSL standings left out of someone's WEB page. I
was going to wait until the season was over before I offered my
opinions about the future of Canadian soccer in local vs national
league...that's for Mr Rose in BC but I didn't write down his e-mail
address...sorry.
