Attendance was not good and looked less than their game on Thursdaay night (an 8:00pm start) with the opponents that night the 2024 CPL Champions, Cavalry FC. Tonight's early start of 7:00pm was probably caused by broadcaster One Soccer bullying them to that time so they could broadcast the 10:00pm starting Pacific FC vs Vancouver FC match which was also a round one game. Fan surveys revealed fans want weeknight games at 8:00pm to enable more fans to get here after the rush hour is finally over. I'll say less than 1000 fans were here until I see an official count. Referee Ben Hoskins gave out four Yellow cards--all to Laval players plus the Penalty kick call--all on plays were they couldn't keep up with the moves of York players. The game turned on the two goals just before halfltime. The longer a lesser-ranked team stays in the game, the more confident they become and the doubts creep in to the superiorly rated team. Very true of York who had not won a game since the season opener back on April 6th--exactly one month ago! At the 30 minute mark the game could have taken a different turn as the lone forward (because of York pressure) Ludwig Amla almost scorred the first goal of the night when he chipped a 10 yarder from the slight left that goalie Diego Urtiaga at 6 yards got an upraised hand to pop up the ball to the right then smother it when it dropped down. Massimo Ferrin was chosen on both FotMob and One Soccer as the game's MVP. His one goal was the late Penalty kick goal after the game was no longer in doubt. He also assisted on Adonijah Reid's goal with a chest pass to provide the tap-in and put all doubts of a possible comeback to rest early in the second half. The CPL site says he won 13 duels and also drew six fouls. Julian Altobelli scored again tonight--the very important opening goal just before halftime--for his sixth goala in six games. Altogether five different players scored tonight. Four of those players scored their first goals of the season--Max Ferrari, Adonijah Reid, Bryan Rosa and Massimo Ferrin. I wrote down that York's Frank Sturing took at least two balls in the face tonight in his first game return from injury. Diego Urtiaga earned the shutout for York with a few routine saves. It was his shutout since joining the team. Cavalry who were here on Friday night and won their first league game of the year had beaten their Canadian Championship first round match 6-0 against Edmonton Scottish and their coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr said the win was just what the team needed to jump start their season. We'll see if tonight does the same for York United. York starts their journey to the Canadian Championship with a (first/preliminary) round win against a League1 Canada team. They've had previous success starting back in 2019 when they, then known as York 9 FC beat Quebec team Blainville 1-0 in a two game aggregate first qualifying rouond then in 2021 with a preliminary round win over League1 Ontario team Master's FA 5-0. Last year it was a one game and out preliminary game against CPL Forge FC 3-1 in Hamilton. Laval player uniforms had numbers that were hard to read with black and white highlighted numbers on a dark purple shirt that became more difficult to see when it got dark by the second half. Laval has only played one game in their league so may have seemed rusty. It was revealed they have a lot of different players since they played in the Canadian Championship in 2023 and were beaten 3-0 in their game against Forge FC. I wonder if the York victory song is MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This" as that's what they played after the game ended. Every goal York scores they play the Vengaboys song "We Like To Party". First home win of the season so we'll have to wait until another home win to see if that happens again. Forge FC made a deal with FC Laval a few weeks ago to provide technical sessions and provide strategic guidance to their coaching staff to ensure 'a cohesive and high-quality approach to player development'. Forge have similar agreements with over a dozen Ontario clubs with at least four having League1 Ontario teams. Their interest isn't the players at the Ll Ontario level but the identifying the young teenage players and bring them into clinics for training. Toronto FC does this too with deals they've signed with L1O FC London and Windsor City. With Quebec not having any CPL team yet in the province, why not look at potential players of the future?Rocket Robin
