Attendance was not announced but it was a lot less than last night's game when AFC Toronto was here. That team announced that 2200 people were here and that was with rain in the afternoon and right up to halfway through the first half. Their first game was a sell out of the lower level of BMO Field but York Lions Stadium will be their home for the rest of the year. [Late edit: I still haven't seen the attendance figures from the message boards where I've found them before so I'll guess maybe a little less than the Forge game which was a Sunday matinee and included a contingent of traveling fans.] Anyway disappointing but the team hasn't won at home in now their third home game. There was a halftime change of referee's with fourth official Scott Bowman replacing Fabrizio Stasolla. There combo of work gave out six Yellow cards (four to York). One of the Cavalry cards was for time wasting in injury time so it's hard to understand the Cavalry complaints after the game that it was York players flopping around to bait the officials into giving the other team cards and freekicks. York played well in patches of the game but haven't put together a consistant ninety minutes this season. At the post game press conference Mauro Eustaquio said the team gave up their two goals on mistakes. The first one 'was on a freekick that we weren't connected and the second on a throw-in that we weren't connected'. Some youth players were here from North Toronto Nitros which was in the organization group that got AFC Toronto started in the women's Norther Super League and AFC just played here last night against Calgary Wild. Cavalry FC is of course from that city. Those two teams play at different stadiums. York's record falls to 1 win, 3 losses, 1 tie for 4 points. Cavalry with their win climb into a tie with them also with four points but they've played one less game. I expect York will fall in the standings after the rest of the games this weekend. This was Cavalry's first win of the season, but the first place champions of the regular season in 2024 are notorious for getting off to slow starts. They have never won a game in April going to when the league began in 2019. Next game for York is Tuesday in the Canadian Championship against League1 Quebec team FC Laval, a team a tier lower than them. Cavalry used their Canadian Championship game this past Tuesday to beat League1 Alberta team Edmonton Scottish 6-0. Because of playing a league game last Saturday and knowing they were playing tonight, their team was heavily rotated. This week it's York playing Tuesday night and then traveling to Victoria BC for a game against Pacific FC on Saturday night. The Tuesday game should be a test of their depth. Winner of this first round match plays Atletico Ottawa who beat League1 Ontario team Scrosoppi FC. All these lower tiered teams have to play on the road in what is said to be a co-efficient based system of ranking the teams by both geographical region and previous years success/failure of the leagues they represent. Looks like they'll never get drawn for a home game so the organizers don't have to worry about having a game at a small field...that's the reasoning they gave in previous years. Miracles can happen. Just last year, two of these lower tiered teams took CPL opponents to Penalty kicks. Pacific FC ended up beating TSS Rovers (from League1 BC) while Saint-Laurent (from League1 Quebec) beat HFX Wanderers and got a home game in the two-game quarter-final against the MLS Toronto FC.
