Earning His Place
Scouted through multiple tryouts, Rome Gino Gabriele stood out to York United’s staff with his defensive awareness, composure
on the ball, and leadership at the back. His performances earned him a place in the Academy squad, where he now prepares
to compete in League1 Ontario.
“This opportunity is massive, and it’s definitely the biggest one I’ve ever had,” says Rome. “I just want to make the most
of it, and I’m incredibly grateful for the chance. No matter what happens, I know I’ll finish the season as a better player
with valuable lessons and great memories.”
A Defender with a Clear Identity
As a centre-back, Rome takes pride in organizing the defense, anticipating plays, and stepping up in crucial moments.
He thrives in physical battles and remains comfortable playing against older, more experienced opponents.
“As a centre-back, I know my role is critical for the team, and I have to be smart,” he explains. “I help my teammates
stay organized defensively, I’m not afraid to make a tackle, and I have no problem competing against older players.
Three qualities that define my game are being vocal, playing well with the ball, and being strong in the air.”
His development has been shaped by key lessons throughout his time in Ontario’s competitive academy system. Learning patience,
overcoming challenges, and continuously improving his game have been essential in reaching this level.
As a centre-back, Rome understands the responsibility that comes with his position. He takes pride in organizing the backline,
staying composed under pressure, and stepping up when his team needs him most.
“My role is really important for the team, and I know I have to be smart,” he explains. “I’m vocal, comfortable on the ball,
and strong in the air. I’m not afraid to make a tackle, and I have no problem going up against older players.”
For younger players looking to follow a similar path, his advice is simple: fully immerse yourself in the game.
“Get as close as you can with your teammates and always enjoy playing football,” he says. “There’s so much to learn from
different perspectives. Through refereeing and coaching, I’ve gained valuable insights that have helped me on the field.
The most important thing is to invest yourself in the game and watch as many matches as you can.”
Advice for Young Players
Rome’s journey has reinforced the importance of fully immersing yourself in football, both on and off the pitch. He believes
true growth comes from understanding the game beyond just playing.
“My biggest piece of advice for younger players is to build strong relationships with your teammates and always enjoy
playing football. Getting involved in other aspects of the game helps develop a deeper perspective,” he shares.
“For example, through refereeing and coaching, I’ve learned so many things that have helped me on the field. The key
is to fully invest yourself in the game and watch as many matches as possible.”
With his first season in League1 Ontario on the horizon, Rome is focused on making every moment count. From stepping
onto the training pitch to representing the club on matchday, he is determined to prove himself at the next level.
