York United FC announce signing of defender Alexander Bergman

York United FC announced the signing of defender Alexander Bergman on Monday to a one-year contract, with club options for 2026 and 2027.
The 20-year-old centre-back, who holds a Canadian passport, arrives after racking up plenty of top-flight experience
in his native Estonia. Most recently, Bergman was with FC Nõmme United, in the capital city of Tallinn, and made 25 appearances
in all competitions while accumulating over 1,800 minutes of action.
“I’m incredibly excited to play in Toronto,” he says.”Although I’ve been in Estonia for such a long time, I have strong roots
here. My Dad went to high school here and my Grandma still lives in Niagara. We have so many family friends in the city
so getting to play in front of so many familiar faces is huge for me. I’ve been watching the growth of the league,
particularly over the past few years, and how it’s become such a fantastic place to develop as a footballer. The club
has always been so committed to giving young talent opportunities and this environment is ideal for me.”
FC Nõmme United won promotion to the top tier having been crowned champions of the 2023 Esiliiga, where Bergman contributed
immensely, earning seven clean-sheets in 13 appearances. Prior to signing with Nõmme, Bergman spent many years
at Tallinna Kalev, coming through the ranks as a teenager and making a professional debut with the club in 2020. Bergman made
his top-tier debut in March 2022 and earned a very first top-tier start the following month.
Despite his tender years, Bergman – who was born in Warsaw, Poland – has already made well over 100 professional appearances
and has also represented Estonia from Under-15 level right through to the Under-19s.
“For such a young player, Alex has already accumulated so much professional experience and that’s a testament to his talent
and work ethic,” says Ricardo Pasquel, President at York United FC.
“We’ve been watching him for quite a while now and his attributes are tailor-made for us. He’s physical, commanding and has
an obsession with the art of defending. He’s comfortable in possession and has an excellent passing range. He’s full
of heart and dedication and he’ll give everything for this club. He’s another fantastic addition and will fit perfectly
into the roster. We’re excited by the possibilities ahead for him.”
