Attendance was announced as 2650 late in the game. Today was Mother's Day and there was an effort put out to have families
attend today--this was the first 'day time' game at their regular home stadium. It was higher than the 2200 that were here on Thursday night (May 1st), their first game at York Lions Stadium which had rain falling for the first half of the game. The place looked 'full'--there are 3000 seats on the lower deck and 1000 more above on a upper deck that can't be seen from the ground except from the opposite side of the field.
[Late news: The attendance was later amended to the league site as 2615]

Both goals were scored late in what looked like would be a scoreless draw. The other games in the league this weekend (by the time I was home to write up this report, the Calgary vs Ottawa game ended in a 0-0 draw to go with yesterday's 0-0 score between Montreal and Halifax. That would make a pretty dull highlight's package for the league to pedal to sports stations!

AFC scored at 83 minutes from substitute Aoi Kizaki's 25 yard shot lofted over players in front of her into the top left corner. Wild equalized on what turned out to be the last kick of the game with a header from substitute Jessica De Filippo on the right post from 6 yards finishing off a cornerkick that sailed in from the left side. De Filippo was born in Mississauga but moved to Quebec at only 1 years old. Interesting that one of the players chosen for the post match press conference by AFC was defender Kaela Hansen who is from Burnaby British Columbia.

We now know that OutKast's song "Hey Ya" is the song after any AFC player scoring a goal and not the personal song for Esther Okoronkwo who had been the only player to score a home team goal until today.

Referee Isabelle Duclos gave out two Yellow cards, both to AFC players that I didn't even catch until reading the linescore. They are listed as at 85 minutes to Nikayla Small on the play that injured Rise player Quinn and at 90 minutes to Colby Barnett for kicking the ball downfield after Rise were awarded a freekick in the AFC end.

It wasn't a good weekend for Toronto based teams in late finishes with York Lions Stadium co-tenants York United FC of the men's Canadian Premier League losing 2-1 on a 94th minute goal on a road trip to Victoria BC against Pacific FC and the hockey team Toronto Maple Leafs losing in overtime down in Florida on Friday night.

AFC regularly starting goalie Sofia Manner had to sit this game out because of suffering a concussion during training earlier this week and back up Sierra Cota-Yarde got to play today. She looked quite competent with very few shots sent her way. I asked at the post game press conference if the team was protecting her and they admitted that they were. Not unexpected from all the soccer I've watched over the years! Cota-Yarde is one of four players that came over from the League1 Ontario North Toronto team when AFC announced their first players.

Today's back-up goalie was 18 year old Noelle Henning who is here from the L1O team NDC Ontario club. After the game I read that she has been signed to a development deal with AFC. The NDC team is one of the best in the league with all teenage players with the goal of helping Canada's long-term development program. It's good to see the league has a way of bringing in extra players to their rosters on short notice. [Very late edit: Just announced Thursday May 15th that Henning will be on the roster for Canada's U-20 team playing in the CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship in Costa Rica at the end of this month.]

Both teams admitted at the presser that the Rise dominated the first 20 minutes of the game then AFC played better to finish the first half then almost all of the second half.

AFC's record improves to 1 win, 2 losses, 1 tie for 4 points (and now knowing the late game score tonight) for a three way tie for third place with Calgary and Ottawa with them being ranked fifth because of the worse goals for/against record. More worrying is Ottawa has a game in hand.

Rise improve to 2 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie for seven points and are all alone in second place. With the other two games this weekend also being ties, no one has changed their rankings. A worry for me is AFC have now burned off three home games in the four games they've played.

AFC now goes on the road next Saturday against Halifax Tides and then Montreal before returning home for a game Saturday June 7th against Ottawa as the league starts cycling through teams a second time but now in reverse fixture of the home and away order.
