York United re-sign defender Oswaldo León 2024-12-13 York United FC announced on Friday that defender Oswaldo León will return for the 2025 season. The 26-year-old Mexican has signed a new one-year deal with the club, with The Nine Stripes holding an option for an additional twelve months. In his debut campaign, the centre-back excelled in spite of some injury issues and made 20 appearances across the regular season and subsequent playoff run. A pre-season setback ensured León missed the beginning of the 2024 campaign and only tasted his first 90 minutes of action on 8th June, when he was also named captain of the side for the very first time in the 2-2 home clash with Vancouver FC. He went on to lead the team on two further occasions and also found the net twice in separate games against the same side: Pacific FC. Individually, León showcased his defensive strength and in-game intelligence by leading the team in blocks (12) and clearances (70), that latter number good for a top-ten place in the entire league. “I’m excited to return and build on all the good things we did in 2024,” León says.”We accomplished a lot together and set new records for the club. But, there’s a lot more ahead. We’re creating something special here and we have big objectives. I’m looking forward to achieving them with a great group of players.” León brings some pedigree to the club, having started out in Club América’s youth setup as a teenager. He made his professional debut at the iconic Azteca Stadium in July 2018 under legendary coach Miguel Herrera. There were subsequent successful loan stints with Club Atlético Zacatepec and Cancún FC, as León started to establish an impressive young career. In 2021, he signed for Tiaxcala in the second tier before León switched to Venados and then Dorados Sinaloa. In total, León has managed 153 senior appearances and over 11,500 minutes of action. “We are thrilled to have Oswaldo back with us,” says Ricardo Pasquel, President of York United FC. “His first season was excellent and he became a strong leader within the group. He’s a powerful defender with great positioning and a wonderful ability to read the game. Oswaldo carries a terrific work ethic and understands precisely what the club is about. We look forward to watching him build on 2024 and push us to even greater days in the future.”back to 2024 York United FC menu
