A Season Of Firsts: York United FC's numerous records in 2024

Despite a year of transition and change, the club reached new heights.

It's been well-documented that York United FC enjoyed a pretty special 2024 season. The big moments have been celebrated already: a very first home playoff fixture was quickly followed by a very first playoff victory. But crunching the numbers in greater detail provides further insight into why the campaign felt so strong.

Firstly, there was the magnificent turnaround in home form. In 2023, much was made of The Nine Stripes' difficulty picking up points at York Lions Stadium. However, that dramatically changed this season.

From the club's first eight games on home soil, they won six and drew one, ensuring they boasted the best home form of any pro sports team in Toronto. They finished the CPL season (regular season and playoff games) with eight home wins: a club record. In total, they accumulated 24 points at home during the regular season: another club record. And contributing to that was the 24 goals they scored at York Lions Stadium for the CPL season, which included standout wins over Atletico Ottawa (4-1), Valour FC (3-1), Vancouver FC (3-0) and the special postseason victory over Pacific FC (2-0). That goal tally was another club record. All-in, there were 12 wins in the CPL season and a PPG average of 1.39.

With goalkeeper Thomas Vincensini keeping seven clean sheets, it contributed enormously to York United conceding their fewest ever number of goals in a regular season. And speaking of individuals, albeit at the other end of the field, striker Brian Wright also set a new club record for goal contributions with 15 (nine goals, six assists).

With Vincensini, Wright, defender Noah Abetneh and Head Coach Benjamin Mora all shortlisted for individual 2024 CPL awards owing to the calibre of their performances, it's another reflection of the impact and influence The Nine Stripes had on the overall league campaign.

Overall, 10 new club records were set in 2024: a sure sign of the new heights the entire organization is bound for.
