Noah Abatneh nominated for CPL's Best Canadian Under-21 Player The 20-year-old enjoyed a superb second season with The Nine Stripes. NOAH'S ARC After a superb sophomore season, York United FC defender Noah Abatneh has been shortlisted for the Canadian Premier League's Best Canadian Under-21 Player award, and confirms his burgeoning reputation as one of the country's best young players. Overall, the 20-year-old centre-back made 23 appearances in all competitions and racked up over 1700 minutes of action, continuing the impressive foundations he laid in his debut season. His campaign was slightly interrupted by injury, but across the 22 CPL games he featured in, he stood strong and was a crucial element of The Nine Stripes' backline. In the 3-1 home win over Valour FC back on 10th May, Abatneh even registered his very first professional goal. Combative but always composed, he finished the season second in blocks (9) and clearances (40), while he was third in aerial duels won (23). Abatneh blossomed in different systems, his performance levels staying at the optimum level regardless of whether he was part of a two-man or three-man central defence. His understanding of the game and his ability to read situations ensured he was a trusted force throughout a record-breaking season for the club. The winner of the Best Canadian Under-21 Player will be awarded a unique piece of Inuit soapstone art, conceived by artist Taqialuk Nuna and carved by artist Ruben Komangapik. The Polar Bear statue is awarded annually to the CPL’s Best Canadian Under-21 Player because, like a developing player, the animal grows from a playful young cub to one of the most respected and formidable animals roaming Canada’s North. Abatneh joins goalkeeper Thomas Vincensini as a 2024 CPL Awards nominee. The ceremony will be broadcast live on dedicated soccer channel OneSoccer and streamed on CBC Gem and cbcsports.ca beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The show will be hosted by Andi Petrillo with appearances by current and former CPL players and coaches, as well as special guests from the Canadian soccer community. © 2024 York United FCback to 2024 York United FC menu
