Halftime: The IFC Academy that had supplied flag bearers and accompanied the players to the field were playing on the south side using tiny nets. There were enough players to field at least four to six teams. In the north end a smaller game with less kids but larger nets was being player by younger kids. In the center circle was balls being kicked into a full sized nets with the Vaughan Soccer Club logos on their jerseys. I believe they were blind by the way they were being led around. I've seen footage of a game that used a noise emitting ball to give the players a sense of direction but I don't think the balls used in this game were special.

Attendance wasn't announced nor did it show up on the league's web site. I thought the crowd was about as big as last Friday's game. The game started tonight after it was already dark. There was a parents vs kids game after the main game which ended just before 11:00pm when the stadium lights cut off. York couldn't score tonight. They've scored one goal or less every game since the home game against Atletico Ottawa when they scored four. The two games that they have won since that time have been by 1-0 scores both on the road. Seven games into tonight. Their stretch is getting to the point where it reminds me of previous seasons when if York gave up the first goal, they wouldn't be able to win. Their recent home record has tailed off. Tonight's stats had them outshot (on target) 6-1 by Cavalry. York's bench was six midfielders, one forward, and a substitute goalie. The 'new' guy, midfielder Kembo Kibato, came in at 57 minutes to replace defender Orlando Botello. Young forward Olusola Jimoh was subbed on at 63 minutes. He scored last week's goal and his first ever when they played in Calgary just over two months ago. Brian Wright had his first game back tonight after an injury and lasted 82 minutes although except for one header just over the bar, I hardly noticed him. Jay Herdman subbed in at 80 minutes for Cavalry. The timing didn't work out that his father, John Herdman, former national coach of Canada's Womens and Mens team and now head coach of MLS Toronto FC could have seen him as he would have been on a plane to Denver for TFC's game against Colorado Rapids tomorrow night. Lots of cards given out tonight with York given seven Yellows which would earn them a $500 fine (for hitting five) so I heard in the press box. Juan Guzman took two Yellows within a minute well into injury time. Timing made it look like that with the second for argueing but it was argued that it was a straight Red because the tackle from behind roll onto Chanan Chanda's legs when he was battling Kembo Kibato for the ball on the sideline. A lot of late injuries for Cavalry which could be a mix of York players hacking down and Cavalry looking for the whistle to slow down play. Both coaches after the game admitted it was a physical game. Cavalry came to town with a bench strength of only four plus a backup goalie. Suspensions and injuries were the reason. In their starters they had 18 year old Michael Harms as a defender getting his first start for the team after playing most if the season with Cavalry U-21s in League1 Alberta--the counterpart to League1 Ontario that York is just getting started with a deal with Alliance United. The loss drops York to fourth in the standings now with a record of 10 wins, 6 ties, 8 losses for 36 points. Again playing the first game of the weekend, they will have to wait to see how much farther they fall behind in the race for the top four. They are fortunate there's a 9 point gap to the fifth place team (which is the last playoff position) and the playoff highway of road game, road game, road game, and road game in the final. That was their path last season. Fourth place only gives you one home game...a midweek game against the fifth place team them three road games. The win for Cavalry flips them over York into third place with a record now of 9 wins, 11 ties, 4 losses for 38 points. They are actually tied with Atletico Ottawa for second in the number of points but are ranked lower because of one less win and one more game played than Ottawa. They were team 'tie too much' early in the season and still lead the league in that category. They lead the league with the fewest losses with only four. A 2-1 win over York here at York Lions Stadium exactly five weeks ago was in the middle of a good run for Cavalry which since York beat them in Calgary 2-1 on July 13th has been 6 wins, 3 ties, 1 loss. They now have a good chance of finishing first like last year. York's record since that home loss to Cavalry on August 16th has been 1 win, 2 ties, and 2 losses and as important, they've burned off three home games in that span. They haven't had a home win since July 26. Next weekend they play away to Forge who will probably still be the first place team. They've had York's number with two 3-0 wins in league play and knocked them out of the Canadian Championship 3-1 although all those games were in the Martin Nash coaching era at the beginning of the season and Benjamin Mora did secure a scoreless tie here on August 23. York now plays the other two 'Top Four' teams their next two games with an away game against Forge FC then a home game against Atletico Ottawa over the next two weeks. I did some more 'marking out' tonight as I found on Wikipedia that Olusola Jimoh now has a picture that I took from the post game press conference at last Friday's game. Also in the week I'd found that the bio of Jim Brennan had his photo changed...that one I remember as him in an early Toronto FC season (when they wore white shorts)...to one of mine at a post game press conference when he was the first coach in the York 9 FC days.Rocket Robin
