There are mini games with dozens of players from the High Park youth club. For something different, in the center circle they have a juggling showdown with two groups of five playing off and the winners of each group having a final. Final Score:...York United FC.........1.............Valour FC...........1......

Attendance wasn't announced but the league web site listed it at 1607. The theme night was "Mexican Independance Day". There were the usual variety of food trucks with deals on food and a marachi band in the south endzone with those trucks. From the main stand, I couldn't hear it because of 'DJ Monsta" spinning house music tunes although focused on Latin and Latino artists. Strange but at the post game press conference, there were none of the usual Spanish language media here.

There was a large contingent of youth teams from the Toronto High Park FC who provided ball kids and the halftime entertainment of mini games. Perhaps because school is back in session and the games are now starting at 8:00pm rather than 7:00pm, there was no post game 'Parents vs Kids' game.

The game started off slow with nothing into either box for the first five minutes and York Max Ferrari getting the first shot on net from near the end line at the 6 minute mark. York gradually took over with 60% ball possession for the game as a whole. 6 to 1 in cornerkicks and 11 to 5 in shots taken.

The Valour goal just before halftime was against the run of play but I wonder if currently injured defenders Frank Sturing or Noah Abatneh would have been more aware of the open man in the box. Defender Kadin Marin-Pereux was taken off the roster with a season ending injury.

Tonight was the first start for 16 year old Olusola Jimoh. It was his second goal overall after scoring in Calgary but his first at home. He was supposed to have made a Babe Ruth like proclamation that he'd score in this game to his school mates as revealed in the press conference after the game. I expect he got the start because Brian Wright was not in the lineup because of an ankle injury. Wright has been acting as a mentor for Jimoh and he was praised by Jimoh after the game.

Jimoh looks so small that he's sort of like ex-TFC Sebastian Giovinco. It wasn't a freekick but a sidefoot shot one-touch from inside the box on the goal that reminded me of the similarities. He had about two more chances that I remember early in the second half. 49 minutes had him run into the box and he was about a yard behind connecting to a cross into the six yard box as he slid towards it. 54 minutes had him break into the box but the retreating defender Themi Antonoglou was able to poke the ball away from him without knocking him over for a sure Penalty kick.

Valour had four starters who had played in past years for the Toronto FC II team with forward Jordan Faria, midfielders Dante Campbell and Shaan Hundal, and defender Themi Antonoglou. All but Antonoglou had come to Valour indirectly with either stops in the USA or Finland in between and two with stops on other CPL teams first. "A coincidence" insisted head coach Phil Dos Santos after the game. York's Mo Babouli and Nyal Higgins have spent time on Toronto FC II as well.

In pregame news that was posted only at 6:30pm that York forward Austin Ricci has been permanently transferred to Vancouver FC while Vancouver FC midfielder Kembo Kibato is coming to York. Kibato wasn't listed in tonight's lineup. Hmm York's substitutes lineup of seven included one back up goalie and six midfielders but OK. Wonder how he will fit in?

York coach Benjamin Mora felt his team 'won' the game as they led in all the offensive categories but for the ball going into the net. Interesting that York almost walked out with nothing as Valour's Diogo Ressurreicao chipped York goalie Thomas Vincensini down the middle from his own side of center that almost went into the net at the 95 minute mark. From our side of the field there was a gasp as the optical illusion from watching from the west stands couldn't see where exactly it landed.

Halftime entertainment was a bit different tonight with besides the mini games of youth teams in each end, in the center circle there was a ball juggling contest with two teams of five competing in 'keep ups'. Winner of each group then had a final contest to decide a winner. The winner did a back flip in both his semi-final and final win to great applause from the crowd. I thought he might be a ringer from the team's newly started 'United Football Academy'.

On my way out after the press conference I saw that all the signboards had been removed. I expected they'd be there as there is a Toronto FC II game here on Sunday afternoon but instead there were two long poles lying perpendicular to the goal line in the south end. There must be some kind of school sport going to happen tomorrow.

I let out a gasp when I was looking through some Wikipedia bios for players and found a very familiar picture of Kembo Kibato with in front of a York United backdrop (he hasn't arrived yet). He was wearing a Vancouver FC uniform. Then I saw the photo credit and saw it was taken by me (at the post game press conference earlier this season). I also saw one for Dante Campbell from the previous Valour post game press conference this season. Also the Wiki of Themi Antonoglou had my picture standing in the team line at the national anthem and taking a Penalty shot last year....wouldn't have thought those shots were sharp enough with the pocket camera I use! I finally got around to answering an e-mail that was lost in my inbox a few months ago and I gave permission to someone who must be a Wikipedia editor who asked for permission and I restated that my Creative Commons Attribution licence that I have on my title page is still valid and now I find all these credits! Wow!

The result improves York's record to 10 wins, 6 ties, 7 losses for 36 points. That's good for third place in the standings but as usual from playing first on the weekend, they could be passed by Cavalry FC and may be further behind the teams ahead of them depending on results over the next two days.

Valour's record improves to 6 wins, 5 ties, 12 losses for 23 points. That moves them up to a tie for sixth with Pacific but Vancouver FC holds the final playoff spot in fifth with 26 points. Head coach Phil Dos Santos was somewhat pleased because they had just played a home game on Monday (making it a short week for them) against Atletico Ottawa and got a 1-1 tie out of that game. Two ties against two of the top three teams in one week shows they are competitive.
