York United have snapped a three-game winless run in CPL play, as they defeated Vancouver FC 1-0 at Willoughby Community Park on Friday.

With that, York have provisionally climbed to third place in the table, sitting three points behind first-place Forge, who will be in action on Saturday.

As for Vancouver, they remained in fifth place in the table, missing an opportunity to climb within three points of fourth place with a win, a gap that has now extended to eight points after this defeat.

The visitors didn’t waste any time in opening the scoring in this game, either, doing so off a set-piece, as Jorge Guzmán curled in a perfect ball for Nyal Higgins, who made no mistake in nodding home from close range to make it 1-0.

Vancouver looked to respond immediately, and nearly did so in the 19th minute, as Ayman Sellouf fired a dangerous shot from distance, forcing a nice save out of Thomas Vincensini.

From there, however, the rest of the half would go by without much to note, as both teams adopted a cautious approach as they tried to feel the other out.

On the other side of half time, Vancouver had another good look at goal in the 49th minute, as the ball fell to Olivier Rommens inside of the box, but his header looped just over the goal.

Then, Alejandro Díaz tried a volley from distance in the 51st minute, but Vincensini stood tall to the shot, palming away the strike with a strong pair of hands.

At the other end, York had a good chance to put the game away in the 86th minute, as Josué Martínez cut inside and fired a dangerous shot, curling his attempt just wide of the goal. Then, Jorge Guzmán had an even better chance on a counter-attack in the 87th minute, but his powerful shot would slice just wide of the goal.

Despite those missed chances, York wouldn’t come to rue them, as they were able to keep Vancouver at bay the rest of the way en route to a crucial road victory.
