Final Score:...York United FC.........4................Atletico Ottawa............1......
Attendance wasn't announced but at the post game press conference a league official said it was 2019. The crowd did look larger than any game this season since the home opener. There were travelling Atletico fans here which would have been more except the game was held on a Friday night and too early for any Ottawa natives getting here except to take the day off. Even the start had to be the club's early time because the league broadcaster One Soccer scheduled another game Vancouver FC hosting Cavalry FC at 10:00pm.
The club has had their superhero night last game (as have or will have all the CPL clubs) but tonight the club brought in former Mexican national team goalie Jorge Campos who had signed some game posters of himself and brought out the game ball to loud applause. At the post game press conference I asked head coach Benjamin Mora about the brothers/owners bringing in more former stars and was answered by 'Yes'. Prizes at halftime included some of Campos's colourful goalkeeper kits.
Finally a game without a scary weather forecast to discourage fans from coming. Not too hot and a clear sky. Of course also gradually building up attendance is the team has been undefeated at home since their home opener.
Besides the announcement of former player Jorge Campos visiting the club, another Mexican was here who has just signed for the club. New player Jose Guzman was only announced yesterday. I expected he'd take time to acclimitize and would be on the bench for a game or two unless he'd secretly been training for weeks like what turned out to be the case with young Olusola Jimoh. Well he played as a striker and started tonight's game and ended up with two assists. He's a 20 year old who is on a year long loan from Liga MX (Primera Division) side Atlas FC. After the game coach Mora said he missed practicing with the team with paperwork and a medical checkup keeping him away. If tonight's performance is any indicator, it looks like he'll have starting position lined up for many more games.
York didn't make any subs until 86 minutes. I had expected Brian Wright to be subbed out at maybe the 60 minute mark because he hadn't touched the ball much tonight but he was the player to shoot in the final goal at 87 minutes. Tonight it was the case of 'don't change a thing'. The team got better as the game went on. Stats available after the game revealed that York held the edge in cornerkicks 8-0. With so many chances they had the ability to mix them up with high balls into the box and short ones to work into the box or passed back for a chip into the box.
Midfielder Josue Martinez missed tonight through Yellow card accumulation and also were missing were still injured players Dennis Salanovic, Brem Soumaoro, and Nyal Higgins. It will be competitive to fit them into a game day roster. Forward Austin Ricci who just returned from a Red card suspension was only brought on at 89 minutes to let Brian Wright soak up the applause for his goal just two minutes earlier. Young Olusola Jimoh was subbed in during injury time to let newcomer Jorge Guzman be cheered by the fans. Captain Mo Babouli was the first brought off at 86 minutes to take a bow.
Atletico went ahead at the 6 minute mark and I had my doubts about York recovering as they did in previous seasons. Ottawa did have two great chances At 68 minutes Ollie Bassett blasts a 20 yard shot up the middle off the bar and five minutes later Ballou Tabla hit the right post on a 22 yard shot from the left. The time of those attempts would have tied the score but Mo Babouli scoring at 77 minutes to make it 3-1 to pretty much put the game away.
The win improves York's record to 8 wins, 3 ties, 5 losses for 27 points and although they stay in second place, they now trail first place Atletico Ottawa by only 2 points. York has often had to play the first game of the weekend and if they win and pass a team, the next night or two a team will pass them. This time with a point cushion over third place Forge FC now at 5 points, they cannot drop any positions this weekend no matter what the other results.
Atletico's record falls to 8 wins, 5 ties, 3 losses for 29 points which is still good for first place. Ties in three of the four league games last weekend including both Ottawa's and York's games have kept the positions the same for two weeks.
