Final Score:...York United.........2..........Vancouver FC..........2..........

Attendance was not announced again tonight. The league site put the crowd as 1167 which is about average but I'd say a disappointment for their first weekend early night game. The Canadian National Men's team had played a friendly away against France that ended less than an hour before this game started. Hey 0-0! There had been rain earlier in the day and overnight that may have stopped the walk-up crowd from coming out. Many in the crowd stayed after the game ended to play in a special parent-child game with so many on the field chasing the ball at the same time that the positioning was like a U-5s game.

This was the team's Pride Night which last year was a fiasco within the team as five players sat out that game for religious or morale reasons. This year I'd been assured that there would be no problems as the team was not wearing any special jerseys. My only problem with last year was I found it hard to read their numbers from a distance with the rainbow multi coloured numbers becing hard to decipher.

This was the first game for York's new head coach Benjamin Mora. He was only named coach on Tuesday and at that time he said he'd only been to one training session with the team up to then. It was hard to say the team has developed an entire new style in such a short time especially with all the players that were missing for tonight's game.

York were missing a alot of their stars. Forwards Mo Babouli is still injured, and we saw Brian Wright injured and had to be subbed out in their last home game. Midfielder Matthew Baldisimo is also still injured. Midfielder Dennis Salanovic had just returned last night from being away in Romania playing for his national team of Liechtenstein. Defender Orlando Botello is serving a Yellow card accumulation suspension. Forward Austin Ricci was missing for a family wedding in Italy!

Oswaldo Leon (a Mexican import) was given his first start of the season after now recovering from an injury and was chosen as captain for tonight. Tomas Giraldo who was 'loaned/traded' from HFX Wanderers for the remainder of the season was given his first start since coming here as a midfielder. 16 year old Jimoh Olusola signed on a special young player's contract just last week was on the bench and saw some action up front. Young Jason Hartill and Christian Zeppieri also got into the game. That certainly helps the team's U-21 minutes requirement. Vancouver leads this year's minutes so far.

I felt Kadin Marin-Pereux played well when he ran upfield. He was called for a hand ball though when he came back defensively and slid to clear a low cross into the box. He looked like a luger but his arm was definitely raised.

Vancouver's James Cameron was named to the Canada U-20 training camp which meets up in a few weeks. Good for him! I also noticed that Toronto FC II had four of their players named that I watch at York Lions Stadium usually on the opposite weeks of York United playing here. Defenders Adam Pearlman, Lazar Stefanovic, and Theo Rigopoulos, and midfielder Andrei Dimitru will be the players missing from TFC II.

York had beaten Vancouver here on April 26th 3-0 with all their goals coming after the 70 minute mark. Brian Wright with two goals and Dennis Salanovic with the other one in that game were sorely missed tonight. Vancouver are certainly better than last year's standings wise but have only won once on the road so far. Their next game is a neutral site game in Kelowna BC against Pacific FC. Vancouver is a lot closer to Kelowna than Victoria on Vancouver Island the home of Pacific.

For the first time this season, York plays the final game of the weekend so they knew what a difference a win/loss/tie meant to them. The tie improves their record to 3 wins, 4 losses, 2 ties for 11 points. This week's other results meant they've dropped down to sixth place because Cavalry earned only their second win this season but with only one loss and six ties, Cavalry moves up to the fifth and final playoff place.

Vancouver picking up a tie tonight moves their record to 4 wins, 3 losses, 2 ties for 14 points and they hang on to second place with four teams behind them all within 3 points. Yep if York could have held on to win, it would have meant four teams would be tied with 13 points. Atletico Ottawa avoids all that with 21 points and is still undefeated. That is where York will be next Saturday for an afternoon game against Ottawa. Their next game after that will be on Wednesday night the 19th against Pacific FC at 7:00pm with Toronto FC at home at the same time playing Nashville FC. So much for building up any attendance momentum with Sunday games.
