Halftime Enterainment: A big game of youth soccer takes place in the north end with the U-10s from Cherry Beach SC. There are four mini nets set up on the west side sideline, four soccer balls on the east sideline, four balloon bats, four potatoe sacks, and soup cans stacked into four pyramids. Four contestants playing some kind of obstacle course racing. It looks like the impossible-to-win tiny hole in a canvas covering the soccer net with shots from well beyond the Penelty spot contest has been retired. This new contest was just played for fun with the Benny Hill theme music playing. Last night Toronto FC II played here and they didn't have a halftime contest of their 'silly games' for the first time this season. Now we know they passed them on to York United. Only problem is the games took up most of the north half so it made if difficult for the York subs to warm up.
Second Half:...starts 8:10pm...There are no shadows on the field except the north east side of the field.Final Score:...York United.........2..........HFX Wanderers FC..........1..........
Attendance was not announced again tonight. The league put it at 1226 (so 177 better than their last home game). Their last Friday night for awhile. Next game will be on a Sunday evening. Nicest weather so far this season. HFX has a lot of players from around the GTA especially who played and coached at League1 Ontario side Vaughan Azzurri. There were quite a few fans who had personalized HFX jerseys.
Biggest news of the week was that York head coach Martin Nash was fired by the team. This was after the team gained a hard fought tie in Calgary against Cavalry FC last Saturday. The team has been a middle of the pack team since the league started and I couldn't see why he'd be dismissed after a modest two game undefeated streak. I know the new owners are ambitious so if they have someone in mind maybe it is the time to bring someone new in. This meant tonight the York coaching staff just moved up one spot. Assistant coach Mauro Eustaquio became head coach until a permanent one is chosen. Goaltending coach Camilo Benzi moved up to be assistant coach and the goaltending coach position is vacant. Dennis Salanovic makes his second start and scores his second goal. He missed most of the preseason and start of the regular season with injuries and international duty (he plays for Liechtenstein). It was also the first game for Oswaldo Leon who had been dealing with an injury picked up in a preseason game against Toronto FC II. He came in right after the HFX goal along with fellow defender Juan Cordova to try to steady the defence and ensure the win. The win tonight improves York United's record to 3 wins, 1 tie, 3 losses for 10 points. That puts them into a three way tie for third with Forge and Vancouver but they are ranked fifth because they have played two more games than Forge and one more than Vancouver. Wanderers' record falls to 0 wins, 1 tie, 5 losses for 1 point and they are last in the standings. They and Valour, just two points ahead of them have fallen behind the other six teams jockeying for the five playoff positions. They scored only their fourth goal of the season in league play. They became one of the first CPL team in the history of the Canadian Championship to be knocked out by a semi-professional team when CS Saint-Laurent beat them in Penalty kicks in Halifax. Last year they finished third in the CPL standings. York are three games unbeaten (they tied Cavalry on the road last week for their first points away from home this season). Mo Babouli is still injured. Next Saturday they are in Hamilton to play Forge FC. Same place as their one game run in the Canadian Championship ended 3-1. The week after that they are back home for a Sunday evening game (6:00pm) against Vancouver FC for the second time this year. That will be the team's Pride Night. Last year four players sat out that game because of political or religious views. I asked a team official about this year. There will be no special theme uniforms this year. Hmm, now I can't see any players complaining about that. We'll see!Rocket Robin
