August 11, 2024...League1 Ontario...Woodbridge Strikers vs Scrosoppi FC game report (by Rocket Robin)
Result and details of the Sunday August 11, 2024 League1 Ontario Men's Premier Division game betweenFinal Score:.....Woodbridge Strikers.......1.........Scrosoppi FC.........2........
Attendance ended up at about 110 on this mild but cooling evening with windbreakers required by the end of the game. A storm cloud blew over but within a few minute it was partially sunny again. A strong crossfield wind effected both teams. Referee Marko Grubisic gave out nine Yellow cards tonight (five to Woodbridge including two to halftime substitute Franz Mella) in an at times close checking, rough game. He and the fourth official warned both coaches repeatedly for complaining but Scrosoppi head coach John Yacou was the only one carded. Good thing the players' benches are on the opposite side of the stands as Yacou was swearing up a storm--sometimes at his own players. I'd forgotten that from last season. Both teams had their chances but by comments I heard from different league officials and the cam guy and what I saw myself, Scrosoppi could have easily had three or four goals in the first half. Scrosoppi's lone forward Tomasz Skublak was again bashed around by defenders but he was the most threatening to get away a shot or tap a pass to a teammate. This was only the third time I've seen Scrosoppi this season. Last year they played their home games at Ontario Soccer Centre (its property borders on Vaughan Grove) and had a long playoff run and I ended up seeing them eleven times. Now they are back in Milton with a renovated field to play on. Same dominating team and must now be favourites to repeat as first place finishers. This year, with no playoffs, if they finish first they get the L1 Ontario spot in next year's Canadian Championships. With what I've read about last year's draw, the L1O champs will have the lowest co-efficient and will play a qualifying game on the road against the lower ranked MLS team—so CF Montreal. This was the last game of the weekend and the standings are set but all teams will play this Wednesday and next weekend. Scrosoppi improves to 22 wins, 5 ties, 1 loss for 38 points with five games to play (that's a game in hand on the four teams behind them). They passed Vaughan Azzurri by one point who could only manage a tie in an away game agaist Simcoe County Rovers. Scrosoppi continues to lead the league with a GF/GA of plus 30. They've only allowed 12 goals in 17 regular season games! Woodbridge's record falls to 8 wins, 6 ties, 4 losses for 30 points four games to go. They hold on to third place.
