23 JULY 2024

WEEKLY REWIND

The latest action from League1 Ontario saw last-gasp results, champions crowned, and hopes rise and falter.

NDC Ontario’s fantastic Friday

NDC Ontario have wrapped up the Women’s Premier Division title for the second time in three years after defeating nearest rivals North Toronto 2-0 thanks to goals from the free-scoring April Lantaigne and Teegan Melenhorst. Unbeaten since April, it’s no surprise that the leaders have been crowned of champions again.

Friday also saw action from the men’s second tier as St Catharines Roma Wolves closed the gap between them and the top three after edging past BVB IA Waterloo 1-0; Michael Solomon’s goal seven minutes after half-time getting the job done for the hosts.

Elsewhere in the Men’s Championship, Windsor City left it late to wrap up a 3-2 win at Pickering with Gershom Dupuy’s winner one minute from time keeping them in the playoff hunt, while North Mississauga now sit five points clear of the relegation playoff spot after beating Darby 2-0.

Work at the weekend

The action from the men’s top tier saw Sigma get back to winning ways after beating in-form ProStars 4-1 thanks in part to Kevaughn Tavernier getting on the scoresheet once again, while Alliance United’s title hopes faltered after a 1-1 tie with Simcoe County Rovers and Scrosoppi’s hopes increased after a 4-1 success at North Toronto; Danial Rafisamii netting twice for the visitors in a win that took them top of the standings.

But it would be temporary, as Vaughan Azzurri won 3-1 at Guelph United the following day to reach the summit again. Reshaun Walkes added another two goals to his growing tally for the season.

Elsewhere, Blue Devils climbed to fifth after a 2-0 victory over Hamilton United. They leapfrogged Burlington who now sit sixth following a 2-1 defeat at Woodbridge Strikers.

The Women’s Premier action saw four games across the Saturday and Sunday, with three of them ending in ties.

The only team achieving that winning feeling were FC London, who dispatched North Mississauga 5-2 on Sunday; Julia Benati adding to her barrage of League1 Ontario goals over the years with a hat-trick.

Alliance United and Simcoe County tied 2-2 on Saturday and it ended goalless between Guelph United and Vaughan Azzurri on Sunday, while Woodbridge Strikers and Blue Devils played out a 1-1 tie in Sunday’s other games.

Chasing silverware

In the men’s second tier, FC London kept their hopes of reaching the Men’s Premier Division next season firmly alive with a 1-0 win at Master’s FA; Owen-Dillon Holmes’ winner on the hour mark proving enough for all three points. But TFC Academy continue to lead the way in the standings after a 3-1 success over third-placed Unionville Milliken, who now sit six points adrift of second.

Rush Canada remain bottom of the Women’s Championship standings on tiebreakers after a 5-0 defeat at home to Hamilton United; Brynn Jurus’ brace helping the visitors to victory.

Elsewhere, Scrosoppi and Burlington shared the points with a 1-1 tie, while the game between Tecumseh United and Pickering played out the same result. Sunday’s game saw ProStars edge out Darby 3-2; Kaitlynn Russell’s injury-time winner sealing the points for the hosts.

League2’s action saw Rush Canada’s men lose 2-1 at home to St Catharines Roma Wolves B, while Sudbury Cyclones tied 2-2 with Pickering B who are the first team to stop Sudbury getting all the spoils since May 18.

The Borough beat North Mississauga B 2-1 for their fourth win of the season, but Master’s FA women are still waiting for their first after losing to Women’s League2 Northeast Conference leaders Alliance United B.
