SPECIAL PREVIEW: L1 CUP – SEMIFINALS
Reaching the L1 Cup final four is a special achievement, but only the winners will be remembered.
Women’s
North Toronto vs Darby – Tuesday, July 16
After repeatedly proving Premier Division capability in the L1 Cup, Championship-side Darby have a date with potentially their
biggest test in the competition yet as they visit high-flying North Toronto in the semifinals.
The home side have shown strength through their Cup run so far, earning their place in the semifinals thanks to goals from
Ivymae Perez and Jade Kovacevic in their 2-0 win over top-flight rivals Woodbridge Strikers, having already seen off
Alliance United earlier in the rounds.
They will not want to overlook their second-tier opposition however as Darby have knocked out two Premier Division sides
in their last two rounds of the cup, beating Vaughan Azzurri 1-0 in the quarterfinals with a Caylah Williams goal after
defeating North Mississauga in the Round of 16.
As the only Championship side remaining in the Women’s L1 Cup, Darby will be looking to defy the odds, and put aside their
mixed league form that has seen them tie three of their last five, to send North Toronto crashing out.
Simcoe County Rovers vs FC London – Wednesday, June 12
An all-Premier tie is the second semifinal in the Women’s L1 Cup as Simcoe, who are unbeaten in three regular-season games,
host an in-form FC London side who have won their last four on the bounce in the division.
This semifinal matchup may be hard to predict; London hold the higher league table position but found themselves to be
second best when the two sides met in late May, where Simcoe won 2-1 thanks to goals from Holly O’Neill and Madelyn Robbins.
League form aside, these clubs’ cup results coming into this game have been significantly strong. In the quarterfinals,
Simcoe took a solid 3-0 victory over a dangerous Scrosoppi side, and FC London were the beneficiaries of an Ally Rowe
brace in their 4-1 win over Guelph United.
FC London are the only team left in the competition who have previously lifted the Women’s L1 Cup, and while they are
just two games away from doing it again, a determined Simcoe side stands in their way.
