WEEKLY REWIND
Read all about the latest twists and turns from the action across League1 Ontario, as we edge closer to the season finales.
Huge clashes
Friday’s action from the Women’s Premier Division saw two huge clashes for the teams at the top.
Leaders NDC Ontario all-but ended Woodbridge Strikers’ hopes of winning the division after beating them 3-2 in an epic
match that saw April Lantaigne’s injury-time strike win the game for the hosts. The division’s earlier game saw
North Toronto maintain pressure on the leaders with a 3-1 success against North Mississauga; Jade Kovacevic on the
scoresheet once again for the hosts.
St Catharines Roma Wolves are certainly becoming a team to watch in the Men’s Championship after defeating both
Master’s FA 2-1 on Wednesday and league then-leaders FC London 2-0 on Friday. These two results make it five wins
in a row for St Catharines who now sit fourth in the standings.
The rest of Friday’s action from the Men’s Championship saw TFC Academy go top of the standings following a 5-1 win
at Pickering with Philip Igbinobaro netting twice for the visitors. A mid-table battle ended in favour of Darby who
beat BVB IA Waterloo in a 4-2 thriller, while Tyler Yasaka, Cameryon Stewart, and Luc Coulombe all netted twice
for North Mississauga in a 6-1 demolition of Windsor City.
Tecumseh United played out two 0-0 ties in Matchweek 11 of the Women’s Championship, against Hamilton United on Wednesday
and Darby on Friday. There were also midweek wins for Pickering, BVB IA Waterloo, Unionville Milliken, and Scrosoppi.
Weekend workouts
Saturday’s action from the Men’s Premier Division saw Simcoe County Rovers dispatch rock-bottom Hamilton United 3-1
thanks to the free-scoring Jevontae Layne’s brace.
Blue Devils won 2-0 at title-chasing Alliance United through second-half strikes from Gianluca Spadafora and Sam Ghouli.
The loss capped off a difficult week for Alliance United who tied against in-form Sigma in midweek.
The direction of the Men’s Premier title, however, remains in the balance after Sunday’s action. Division leaders
Woodbridge Strikers suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to ProStars, who moved up to seventh in the standings following
back-to-back wins.
Vaughan Azzurri, who dramatically tied 2-2 with Woodbridge on Wednesday thanks to two late goals, now sit just behind
Woodbridge on the same points tally following their 3-1 win over North Toronto.
Fellow title-contenders Scrosoppi are third in the standings after winning 2-0 at Burlington, condemning the Bayhawks
to their fourth defeat in five matches, and Guelph United stopped Sigma’s winning streak by beating their visitors 4-0
thanks in part to Jared Agyemang’s brace.
Reigning Women’s Premier champions Alliance United can rest a little easier following a 4-2 success against Vaughan Azzurri,
but they still have work to do in their game in hand if they are to avoid the relegation playoff place in a few weeks’ time.
Like their male counterparts, Simcoe’s Women’s Premier team were victorious in Matchweek 11 as they picked up all
three points with a 3-0 win against Blue Devils.
Sunday’s only game from the women’s top tier saw FC London beat Guelph United 1-0 thanks to Lauren Rowe’s strike midway
through the second half, further cementing London’s top-four position in the standings.
Taking opportunities
Pickering kept themselves in the race for the Women’s Championship title after they dismissed third-placed
Unionville Milliken 3-1; Hollie Babut netted twice for the hosts in their second win of the matchweek having defeated
Rush Canada on Wednesday.
Rush are off the bottom of the standings following their 1-0 win over ProStars thanks to Emma Deschatelets’ strike
five minutes from time.
BVB IA Waterloo are the new leaders of the women’s second tier after beating fellow title challengers Scrosoppi 1-0
through Allison Beaumont’s early goal, while the wait goes on for rock-bottom Burlington to add to their sole win
of the campaign following a 2-0 defeat at home to Hamilton United.
The only game from the Men’s Championship at the weekend saw Unionville Milliken strengthen their grip on third
in the standings by defeating Master’s FA 2-1 through goals from George Akpabio and Haji Shee. The hosts remain
ninth following the result and in danger of the relegation playoff spot.
League2’s action saw Sudbury Cyclones dispatch Darby B 4-0, The Borough FC win 3-0 at Woodbridge Strikers B, and Rush Canada
defeat Windsor City B 3-0 in a super weekend for the 2024 expansion teams. Master’s FA lost 4-0 at home
to North Mississauga B in Women’s League2.
