WEEKLY REWIND
The race for the Men’s Premier Division’s top spot has ignited with three teams on 19 points.
Setting the pace
Friday’s match in the Women’s Premier Division saw April Lantaigne’s strike edge leaders NDC Ontario past Vaughan Azzurri
by 1-0, extending NDCO’s unbeaten run in the women’s top flight.
Most of the Men’s Championship action took place on Friday, with FC London continuing to set the pace with a 4-1 win
at Darby. They now sit top ahead of TFC Academy, who were held to a thrilling 3-3 tie by now-bottom side North Mississauga
after Tyler Yasaka’s equalizer five minutes from time.
North Mississauga’s failure to pick up all three points was punished by St Catharines Roma Wolves and Master’s FA.
St Catharines beat Pickering 3-1 to climb off the bottom of the standings, while eighth-placed Master’s FA won 2-1
on the road at BVB IA Waterloo thanks to Aidan O’Keeffe’s injury-time winner.
Double matchweek
The fight for the Men’s Premier Division top spot is hotting up after leaders Burlington had to rescue a point against
rock-bottom Hamilton United; Leaford Allen’s equalizer cancelling out Lucas Neto’s first-half strike for the visitors.
Alliance United sit second after sneaking past Woodbridge Strikers to win 2-1 with Atchuthan Sivananthan’s brace proving
the difference. It was a frustrating week for the title-chasing Strikers who were held to a 1-1 tie by an improving
Simcoe County Rovers in midweek, with Jevonate Layne on the scoresheet once again for the Barrie side.
Simcoe then claimed their second 1-1 tie of the week on Saturday, this time against a North Toronto team that defeated
Blue Devils on the road on Wednesday.
North Toronto ramped up the heat on Women’s Premier table-toppers NDC Ontario with a 3-0 win over Simcoe thanks in part
to Jade Kovacevic’s second brace in three days. Kovacevic scored twice in her side’s victory against FC London
in a selection of midweek matches that also included Simcoe registering a comeback victory against Guelph United.
FC London bounced back from midweek disappointment with a 4-1 victory at North Mississauga, Ally Rowe scoring twice
for the visitors to help them cement their fourth-place position for the time being.
Above London in the standings are Woodbridge who won 2-0 at Alliance United through strikes from Samantha Murphy
and Ida Miceli, leaving Alliance still in the relegation playoff spot.
Livestream spectacle
The only game from the Men’s Championship saw third-placed Unionville Milliken complete a second-half turnaround
to win 3-2 against sixth-placed Windsor City thanks to Haji Shee’s winner one minute into added time. This thriller
was broadcast live on League1 Ontario YouTube, and also included an impressive bicycle-kick goal from George Akpabio.
The action from the women’s second tier saw Scrosoppi remain top of the standings after they tied 1-1 with
fourth-placed Hamilton United; Gabriella Machado’s second-half strike forcing both sides to settle for a point.
Burlington’s clash with Tecumseh United – which was live on League1 Ontario YouTube – also finished 1-1 after
Leah Homan’s leveler deep into added time rescued a point for the hosts.
BVB IA Waterloo were the only team that won in the division this week as they demolished bottom side Rush Canada 6-1;
Abby Kraemer’s treble helped seal the big win.
League2’s Men’s action saw Rush Canada complete their third consecutive three-point haul – blowing away
Hamilton United B with a 7-0 victory. The Borough FC tasted defeat again in the Central Conference – this time
a 3-1 home defeat to Burlington B.
Meanwhile in the Northeast Conference, Sudbury Cyclones continued to impress with a 2-1 win at Vaughan Azzurri B
on Sunday.
Sigma success
Sunday’s action from the Men’s Premier Division saw Sigma pick up their second straight 2-1 win, defeating Blue Devils
with Kevaughn Tavernier’s brace. The visitors were rooted to the bottom a few weeks ago and now sit ninth
in the standings.
Elsewhere, Scrosoppi played out a goalless tie with Vaughan Azzurri, who sit fourth and fifth respectively,
while Guelph United comfortably dispatched ProStars 4-1 thanks to Gray Yates’ brace from the penalty spot.
After ProStars’ 2-0 win against Guelph on Thursday, these sides remain level on points at the end of the matchweek.
The only game from the women’s top tier on Sunday also saw Guelph United pick up a three-point haul with a 4-0
demolition of the young Blue Devils team at the bottom of the standings.
ProStars and Unionville Milliken played out a 1-1 tie in the Women’s Championship; both sides earned a point after
Olivia Allen’s second-half leveler cancelled out Chantel Spalla’s opener.
