WEEKLY REWIND
Burlington continued their perfect start to the campaign in the Men’s Premier Division as the battle for positions intensifies.
Ending May in style
The action from the Women’s Premier Division on Wednesday saw NDC Ontario stay unbeaten as they hammered Simcoe County Rovers
4-0, thanks to braces from April Lantaigne and Ava Greco.
Guelph United edged past Woodbridge Strikers to win 3-2, Olivia Rizakos scoring twice for the hosts. Ravina Braich’s solitary
strike saw North Mississauga edge past Blue Devils, and Jade Abreo’s leveler sealed a point for FC London at Vaughan Azzurri
with the game finishing 1-1.
On Friday, North Mississauga grabbed their first win of the Men’s Championship campaign thanks to a 2-0 success
at BVB IA Waterloo; James Arango and Luc Coulombe were the goalscorers live on League1 Ontario YouTube.
Kicking off June
Burlington are proving tough to beat in the men’s top tier following yet another win; this time, a 3-1 success over ProStars
thanks in part to a brace from the free-scoring Mauro Lulli.
Saturday’s action from the Men’s Premier Division also saw Woodbridge Strikers move up to third in the standings after a 1-0
victory secured with Ronaldo Marshall’s spot-kick. Hamilton United tied 1-1 with North Toronto thanks to Fadi Salback’s equalizer.
Simcoe County Rovers finally registered their first win of this Men’s Premier season with a 2-1 success over Guelph United;
Paul Karagiannakos with the winner two minutes into added time, after Guelph thought they had tied the game through Jared Agyemang.
In the women’s top tier, North Toronto registered a 3-0 win, with three different scorers, over FC London to boost their
chances of catching league leaders NDC Ontario. Simcoe County Rovers tied 1-1 with Guelph United after Aliya Gomes’ strike
cancelled out Victoria Hinchliffe’s early opener for the visitors.
The Men’s Championship saw the table’s top two face off, and FC London defeated TFC Academy with a 1-0 win; Bai Essa Coker
netted once again. The result sent the visitors top of the standings and ruined TFC Academy’s perfect run in the second
tier this season.
There was also a victory for Darby at Windsor City after Nigel Buckley’s brace sealed a 2-0 win for the visitors,
while St Catharines Roma Wolves put four past in-form Unionville Milliken with Ronaldo Homenszki’s double helping the away
side to a 4-1 success. This was the first win in the division for St Catharines, which makes the victory even more
impressive as they look to climb out of the relegation playoff spot.
In the Women’s Championship, Hamilton United have four wins out of five to start the campaign after beating Burlington
3-0, with Jenna Parris’ strike putting the game beyond doubt on the verge of full-time.
Unionville Milliken tied 0-0 with Pickering, while goals from Tori Chia and Caylah Williams saw Darby win 2-0
at Tecumseh United, their third three-point haul of the season.
Evenly matched
Sunday’s action from the women’s top tier saw Blue Devils put up a strong fight against Vaughan Azzurri,
but Maia Torelli’s solitary strike bagged Vaughan a slender victory.
It was the same 1-0 scoreline at Alliance United where they suffered defeat against North Mississauga through
Amanda Cripps’ spot kick just before half-time. It was a result that sent the Panthers up to third in the standings
and the reigning champions to eighth.
Samantha Murphy’s scoring spree continued after her brace rescued a point for Woodbridge Strikers at home
to NDC Ontario. The game finished 2-2 and was the first time that NDC Ontario have been left to settle for
a point in this campaign.
The only game from the men’s top tier on Sunday saw Vaughan Azzurri tie 2-2 with Blue Devils – another exciting
encounter between these two storied League1 Ontario clubs.
Sunday’s game between Master’s FA and Pickering in the Men’s Championship finished with the visitors coming
out on top after Barrington Smith’s strike was the only goal of the game, wrapping up a 1-0 victory.
ProStars hammered five past Rush Canada without reply in Sunday’s only match from the women’s second tier;
braces from Teagan Handley and Chantel Spalla guided the hosts to a high-scoring victory and to seventh
in the table.
In Men’s League2, there were wins for all three expansion teams at the weekend. Rush Canada defeated
Windsor City B 1-0, after Sudbury Cyclones and The Borough FC had both won 3-1 on Saturday; the Scarborough
side were 1-0 down but scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to bank maximum points.
There were narrow defeats to Master’s FA and St Catharines Roma Wolves in the Women’s League2 Division
this week, with the latter falling the wrong side of a 4-3 thriller.
Both of Scrosoppi’s games – in the Men’s Premier and Women’s Championship – were postponed.
