WEEKLY REWIND
Matchweek Two picked up where the first one left off, showing that every point matters even this early in the season.
Friday Goals
The second weekend of the new League1 Ontario campaign got under way at Championship level.
In the men’s second tier, FC London continued their great start to the new season with a 3-1 success
at BVB IA Waterloo. A double from Bai Essa Coker and a further strike from Dante D’Oria was enough to seal all
three points for the visitors, despite Logan Rieck’s early opener for the hosts.
Pickering picked up their first win of the campaign by seeing off St Catharines Roma Wolves 2-1; Ayomide Abobare
and Deandre Watkins netted for the home side. Darby also got points on the board for the first time this term;
beating Unionville Milliken 3-1 through second-half goals from Kashiff Collins and Erion Metaj.
The only game in the women’s game on Friday saw Scrosoppi convincingly defeat hosts Darby, as they demolished
them 4-0. A treble in the first 17 minutes from Mya Newcombe effectively sealed all three points for the visitors
before half-time.
Free-scoring Saturday
It was a big day for Sudbury Cyclones and The Borough FC who played their inaugural league matches in the
Men’s League2 Division at the weekend.
Despite a hearty comeback, North Toronto B’s three goals in the first 22 minutes was enough of a buffer to see off
The Borough 3-2. But the Cyclones had a day to remember, Oluwatimilehin Olatoke scored an opening day hat-trick
to help the new Sudbury side win 4-0 against Alliance United B.
Elsewhere in Men’s League2, Rush Canada were defeated by Scrosoppi B, and in the women’s third tier, St Catharines
Roma Wolves beat Burlington B 2-1 for their second win of the matchweek.
The Men’s Premier Division saw champions Simcoe County Rovers defeated by Alliance United 3-1 at J.C. Massie Field.
Pablo Perez was on the scoresheet again for the visitors, netting in the first minute.
Hamilton United earned their first point of the season after a 1-1 tie with ProStars. Youssef Zaghloul netted for
the hosts in the first half before Bradley Ogbevuon’s leveler just under 20 minutes from time meant the spoils
were shared.
NDC Ontario secured their second win from as many games in 2024 as they beat North Mississauga 2-1. April Lantaigne
and Teegan Melenhorst were the goalscorers for the visitors.
Alliance United thought they were on their way to a second victory of the campaign following Miranda Badovinac’s
first-half strike, but a last-minute equaliser from Cloey Uddenberg saw the visitors held to a 1-1 tie against
Simcoe County Rovers.
There were goals galore in the Men’s Championship as Windsor City picked up their first win of the campaign
in some style. A brace from Gershom Dupuy helped the hosts romp to a 5-2 victory over North Mississauga.
A first-half double from Luca Accettola saw TFC Academy exit the L’Amoreaux Sports Complex with a 4-2 win over
Master’s FA. That’s eight goals in two games for the former Men’s Division champions.
The Women’s Championship served up a 0-0 tie as Rush Canada Academy picked up their first point against
Unionville Milliken. Elsewhere, strikes from Jaiden Morgan, Andrea Petrina and Victoria Orfei sealed a 3-1 win
for Hamilton United over Pickering.
Action-packed Sunday
The Men’s Premier Division was home to a thumping victory for regular-season champions Scrosoppi, as they continued
their great start with a 5-0 success over hosts Blue Devils. Khody Ellis’ early brace set the visitors on their way
to the win.
Burlington also continued a perfect start to the new campaign, as Augustus Oku scored twice to help the hosts to a 3-1
win over Sigma.
Woodbridge Strikers picked up their first three points at the second time of asking, as goals from Ronaldo Marshall
and Exosse Kadiebue wrapped up a comfortable 2-0 victory over North Toronto. Vaughan Azzurri also have four points
from their opening two games, after a 3-1 win over Guelph United, thanks to strikes from Raheem Rose, Jeronimo Sola
and Christopher Campoli.
FC London gave Blue Devils a bitter afternoon in the Women’s Premier Division as they dispatched their opponents 6-0
thanks in part to braces from both Julia Benati and Charlotte Cromack.
Nia Fleming-Thompson was the second-half saviour for Vaughan Azzurri after her 74th-minute winner sealed a nervy 3-2
win over Guelph United, for whom Sasha Marikano netted a first-half brace.
North Toronto secured victory by the same scoreline on the road to Woodbridge Strikers, with Jade Kovacevic doing what
she does best. She popped up in the 84th minute to net a late winner for the visitors at Vaughan Grove Field, and her
second goal of the game.
After a 4-0 defeat to Pickering last time out, ProStars got their Women’s Championship campaign up and running with
a 1-1 tie against Burlington. Aya Naamani’s first-half opener was cancelled out by Taliyah Hutton’s second-half leveler.
Elsewhere, Sophia Cabral’s brace was enough to wrap up an edgy 2-1 victory for BVB IA Waterloo over Tecumseh United.
