Final Score:......Vaughan Azzurri.......3.......Guelph United.......1........
Attendance was grew to about 200 people by halftime. The temperature was getting cooler after it got dark but I didn't feel uncomfortable despite not putting a parka into my car when I left home in the early afternoon to first see the MLS NEXT Pro game between Toronto FC II and Columbus Crew 2 played at York Lions Stadium (straight south of NMRP on Keele Street). There had been a game here between the Vaughan and Guelph's womens' teams that had just finished before I arrived. Vaughan had won that game 3-2 in a come-from-behind-victory. Referee Mahboob Gulestani gave out five cards including one to Guelph at the 1 minute mark for a body check near the center line (it was their only card of the night so they must have learned what was going to be allowed early on) and a Red card to Vaughan's Saahb Kular at 89 minutes on a delayed call when Gulestani was called over by the fourth official. Also two at once to Vaughan—one for a sliding tackle and then to a teammate (the captain) who complained about the call. Hey, no backtalk allowed! The Vaughan response by scoring within three minutes of the Guelph goal steadied any fear of a shift in momentum. The Red card was too late to have much effect on the game. Vaughan built a two goal lead and were able to effectively kill off the game. A last second header deep into injury time as happened against them wasn't going to cost them points like it did last week. The win improves Vaughan's record to 1 win, 1 tie for 4 points. As this was the last game to finish the second week of the season, they are in a three way tie for third place with Alliance United and Woodbridge Strikers. With no playoffs this year all eyes look to see what team is in first for the championship and entry into the Canadian Championship in 2025. It's a two way tie with 2 wins/6 points for both Scrosoppi FC and Burlington SC. Scrosoppi will play their first home game next weekend although last year their 'home' was at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan 40 km away as their school field in Milton was being renovated. Guelph's record falls to 1 win, 1 loss for 3 points and they are all alone in sixth in the twelve team Premier division. Learning from the App: This week I learned that the App only has a 7 day history! I could see the Vaughan lineup from last week as they played last Sunday night but not Guelph whose game last week was on Saturday. Once the lineups were posted (20 minutes before gametime) it was possible to see if an individual player was in the previous week's game but that's time consuming. If it was all that important to me I would look it up through the league's website. Oh and as I'm writing this up I see that a Vaughan player who played in both of their Premier League games both Sundays, played in their League2 game on the Wednesday in between. Well why not? You're 18 (as shown on the App) and never get tired. Now there's a reason right there for reserve teams not being allowed into the L1O League Cup.Rocket Robin
