Final Score:....Canada......3........Suriname........0.......

Attendance was announced near the end of the game as 13239 on this cold and wet night. That was about 10000 less than last month at the exhibition game between Canada and Panama used as a preparation to this quarterfinal series. I think the weather played more of a part keeping people away than their mostly unknown and lowly ranked opponents. It had been raining from more than two hours before game time which pretty much killed the walk up crowd. The field was in pretty good shape with practices being held at the BMO Training Grounds in Downsview rather than here and practice nets placed near the sidelines for the warm ups tonight.

Suriname players came out for their pregaame walkabout in black parkas with their national team logos on them. I can't see them ever needing to wear them again because in World Cup Qualifying, they will not have to play the only 'cold climate' CONCACAF teams as Canada and the US don't need to qualify because they are among the co-hosts of the 2026 tournament.

Referee Katia Garcia and two other female referee's assistants led an all Mexican officiating crew. The Panama game here was led by an all female American crew. This game had more fouls but she kept it pretty much in control giving out only one Yellow card...to the Suriname goalkeeper for complaining about a call.

Canada dominated from the start with most of the action taking place in the Suriname half of the field. Suriname had no shots on net during the home match on Friday night although they did have a shot go off the cross bar. Tonight was not much different except they did get a shot away that goalie Dayne St. Clair batted down at 43 minutes. St. Clair played the Friday night game too. Two shutouts but not enough material to make a highlight reel to add to his resume.

Jamie Knight-Lebel made his debut for the Canadian team coming in at 73 minutes with the series no longer in doubt. He replaced Kamal Miller who had been injured for at least the third time during the game. He fitted in in his favoured position as a defender. This subbing time also was a good time to bring in Tajon Buchanan who had recovered from a long injury.

Moise Bombito played a brilliant game with an assist on Shaffelburg's first goal then having his first ever goal for Canada called back after a VAR review just before halftime. At least he and the crowd had three minutes of joy before the call taking it back.

The win by 3-0 meant that Canada easily won the quarterfinal series 4-0 by aggregate. It was undetermined who their semi-final opponent would be after the game ended as the final quarterfinal game involved Mexico hosting Honduras with Honduras holding a 2-0 first game lead. By the time I got home at midnight, Mexico had won at home 4-0 to advance. Mexico with their first game loss were only ranked fourth of the semifinalists, Canada because of winning both their games and having a one goal better plus/minus than the Americah team finish first which sets up the one game semi-final against Mexico in Los Angeles in March. The US plays Panama who finishes with a win and a tie against Costa Rica. Just what the organizers wanted-- a potential US vs Mexico final.

Last month when Canada was here Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David and Richie Laryea were presented with awards for reaching 50 games playing for the national team. Tonight it was Alistair Johnston and Junior Hoilett with this honour.

Jonathan David takes over sole possession of Canada's goalscoring lead with his 31st goal tonight. Cyle Larin almost kept pace but he rang the right post at 79 minutes and got some itchy fingered member of the stadium crew to launch the fireworks. Combined with the goal that VAR overturned, lucky us got to see the fireworks five times during the game plus after the Canadian anthem before the game and after the final whistle. OK not as many as a Taylor Swift concert but she didn't have a concert tonight.

Were there any Suriname fans here? I initially throught there were many until I saw that many people were eating popcorn that was served in green coloured boxes so it looked like small Suriname national flags from a distance.

I was sitting in the third row of the press box tonight which made it difficult to take pictures but I could see the OneSoccer broadcast on the monitors above the first row seats where I was for the last game. I just had to realize that there was about a 50 second delay which I was able to use to see replays of action when I missed some of the details.

I had looked up a few weeks earlier the TTC website to see if the Harbourfront streetcar line was running from Union Station all the way over to the Exhibition Grounds and would not be short turned at Spadina because of overhead wire work dead-ending the line and causing me a six block uphill walk to King Street to catch the next nearest streetcar route. I'd planned two alternate routes if this was still the case. No rerouting tonight. Hmmm...construction/renovations are listed as recommencing November 24th which is the day after the last Taylor Swift concert in the city. Hey thanks Ms Swift! You've actually improved public transit for your time here for city officials to hide from the world how bad things are.
