Final Score:...Canada......4.....Jamaica......0.....

As soon as the game ended, fans were singing 'O Canada' and started another Viking clap with Jonathan Osorio
beating a fan drum. This celebration was held in the center circle where it would play out better on TV.
The players then walked to the south east corner again to meet with the Voyageur fans. Players came back
to the sideline at the center line to put on new black t-shirts over their winter jackets. The logo on
the front in white was 'We Can' and on the back in red was 'Canada' (as the player name) and the number '22'.
I'm sure those will be available to the public soon!

A Canadian team documentary played on the scoreboard. I was surprised that 75% of the fans stayed for the
final presentations. Veteran players from the CMNT were introduced like Dwayne DeRosario Iain Hume (who was
signing autographs at a table before the game), Julian DeGuzman etc. Last was Paul Dolan who had played
on the Canadian World Cup team in 1986.

A message from Alphonso Davies who is still recovering from a hear ailment and missed the last two WCQ cycles
was played. A twitch stream exists of his reaction of him watching the team qualify.

The current players of the team were announced with the ones that weren't in today's game introduced first
before the starters. A sign board had been prepared with the team logo and 'qualified' printed on it. The
center circle had a cover unrolled that had the Canada Soccer logo and above it 'qualified' and below it
'FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022'.

The team lined up behind the sign board for photos and later family and friends posed behind it too.

Attendance was announced as 29,122. This is a record at this stadium for an CMNT game. The first game
in this cycle the attendance was restricted to 15,000 because of COVID protocals but almost half the
fans were cheering for Honduras. This game the tickets mostly sold out during pre-sale and the
crowd was wildly pro-Canadian.

Jamaica had been eliminated in the last FIFA window so used an experimental side today but were
widely outplayed with few threats on goal. Canada outshot them 20-2. There was a CPL player
in today's game but he was Alex Marshall on the Jamaican team coming on at 55 minutes. He plays
for HFX Wanderers.

The officiating crew were all from Mexico and were hardly noticeable as there was only one Yellow card
given out. There was no added time given at the end of the second half as the score was out of
hand and I'm sure they'd like to get back to the warmth of the dressing room. The first half had
only one minute added despite there being two injuries requiring trainers from both teams so I thought
four minutes would be fair.

Today's CONCACAF games had staggered starting times and for a game in Canada at this time of year,
it would not have been fair to have this game start at night when it would be even colder. There were
times in this game where snow was being blowing in from the north end on a strong wind. Canada
played against the wind in the first half giving me the idea that they'd lost the coin toss but it
may have been the plan to have the wind at their backs for the second half.

It was very important that the Canadian score early to keep the crowd in the game so 12 minutes
was the perfect time. Getting their second goal just before halftime was also a boost for
confidence. Wow this qualifying will happen today! Wrapping it up early was important because
the longer the game is close something like a Red card or a fluke own goal like the retreating
Jamaican player put in could turn the situation around.

I thought Stephen Eustaquio was the best player on Canada. He took most of the cornerkicks and
sent many crosses into the Jamaica box during open play.

I watched the game from the press box as the COVID protocol rules have been relaxed. If I'd had
to sit outside, (I had the Voyageurs codes to buy the presale offer), I don't think I would have
taken my mittens off to write anything!

My mind drifted back to the first time I saw the national team. It was 1986 and the team had
qualified for the World Cup. They held an exhibition game at Varsity Stadium (while it was
full capicity before they gradually condemmed sections) and the opponent was Wales who did
not qualify to play in Mexico. I don't remember much about the game except I sat in the end zone
and the Canadians won 2-0. The fan support was more than 90% Welsh. Some sorehead said that
both goals were offside but I couldn't really judge the angle from where I was sitting. In those
days the rules were still get behind the last TWO men back and you were considered offside.

I never thought Canada would not qualify again. In recent years it got worse in that Canada
wouldn't even make the Hexagon so many times in a row. This cycle Canada had must win games
against Surinam and Haiti that would have ended their campaign last year!

I get a thrill when I see a national team player and can say "Sigma FC" or "Woodbridge" watching
them as a teenager. A new season is starting next month in the leagues I cover and I'll
be busier than ever.
