Attendance was not announced but I found it listed on an attendance site as 3863. That was pretty good for a day that had started out rainy. It was raining on my drive here and may have kept a few fans away who were coming from the farthest reaches of York area. The east side stands were being used for only the third time I could remember. There was the home opener against Forge FC when mainly travelling fans were over there (the game that had its finish delayed by a thunderstorm) and the Canadian Championship game when they played MLS Montreal and many TFC fans were here to boo the Impact. It looked like the team was finally reaping the benefits of so much promoting to the youth teams of the area with a lot of families in that east stand. I'd always thought if the club had a special youth club day every weekend game--Richmond Hill Soccer Club Day then maybe Woodbridge Soccer Day etc. then the clubs could concentrate on their one day. Some of the games I've been to earlier in the season looked like there were barely enough children to be ball kids. Besides the weather there were also two large soccer distractions. Toronto FC were playing downtown with a 5:30pm start so there was no jumping on the subway to get there in time. Also even CPL loyalists were split because at 1:00pm Forge FC were playing in Hamilton which could peel off some fans living between the two cities. There were less reporters so I got in the first question today. One lure to be here was a post match BBQ for season ticket holders. The organizers had brought back the entertainers from Arcadia Live again. I didn't hear them after I was through at the press conference and one roadie said they had technical problems so they had canned music by the time I arrived. The child who sings the national anthem is also from the Arcadia Live talent roster. Too bad that this crowd which wanted to be entertained--ie by the home team winning was disappointed again. York 9 has hosted three games since winning Saturday July 27th with a then record 6-2 score against HFX Wanderers FC but have lost each game since. They lost 2-0 against the then last place Valour FC on August 10th, and 2-0 against Pacific FC on August 17th. Both chances they had a chance to win and jump to third place. Because the bottom five teams get beaten by Cavalry FC and Forge FC and win lose and tie against each other they all hover below .500. York had another opportunity today to win and jump to third. Valour FC came into this game having lost 8-0 to Cavalry FC (now that's the new scoring record) and then 3-1 against Forge FC--both home games. Coming into this game and York getting off to a perfect start with a goal at 6 minutes that in other weeks would have got Valour players to play as if they were going to lose again, instead they turned things around with two quick goals and never looked back. The Valour lineup had two scratch outs on the game sheets. Tyson Farago was written in as the goalie with Mathias Janssens scratched out. The back up goalie was Svyatoslav Artemenko. Ali Musse was slotted in as a starting forward switching places with Glenn Muenkat who subbed in later. Forward Michael Petrasso was not on the bench for today's game. He scored here his last visit. I had watched his younger brother Luca Petrasso play for Toronto FC II on Friday afternoon. Young Tyler Attardo was a starting forward today over Michele Paolucci. Attardo scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season. Wow on Valour's last visit here Attardo didn't get into the game until 83 minutes. Valour head coach Rob Gale said that three local Winnipeg lads scored all the goals today. Attardo only turned age 18 earlier this month. I had always thought Dylan Sacramento was a Toronto area kid because I watched him play for Toronto FC Academy then last year for Vaughan Azzurri. A story was published before the season started that he was from Winnipeg and his grandmother's house was a few streets over from Valour Road where the team got its name because of the WWI Victoria Cross winners coming from the same street. Another thing I have to get used to is Sacramento no longer wears orange coloured boots (easy for me to see in scrambled goals watching League 1 Ontario games) but they are now a gold colour. He didn't play nor was on the bench the other time Valour was here. Returning to the team were tall defender Skylar Thomas (who I watched on Toronto FC II a few seasons ago) and defender Jordan Murrell (another TFC II player) returning from suspension for his table kicking incident in Halifax after being Red carded. For York, it's been announced that midfielder Luca Gasparotto was the 'iron man' of the league as the only player who's played every minute of York's games. Also since the last home game midfielder Emmanuel Zabazis has left the team to return to school. I had read a week or so before that he had decided NOT to go back and would stay with the team. I don't know what changed his mind. Somewhere in between I think the player deadline passed by so York cannot now replace him. While at the game it was mentioned that York University was playing a soccer game later that day on the Alumni Field so in theory I may have seen him on my way out except the woman's team was playing first. Referee Marie-Soleil Beaudoin gave out three Yellow cards (two to Valour) in a game not known for roughness nor hard checking. There was a lot of slipping around in the first half on the wet ground. [Late news: The webstream announcer said York head coach Jim Brennan picked up a Yellow card at 66 minutes for argueing a call but I didn't notice it.] Surprise for today was Ryan Telfer was not a starter. His last two games were while he was away playing in the CONCACAF Nations League for Trinidad & Tobago for which he scored a goal. At the press conference after the game he said he was ready to play the full 90 but coach Brennan added to his answer by saying he'd picked up a knock while away and he decided not to start him. York were burned by too many passes forward that shredded their defence. Most games you'd think two goals by Rodrigo Gattas would have been enough to win with the stingy York defence. Next game for York is away to FC Edmonton on Saturday the 21st. Next home game is Saturday the 28th against Cavalry FC. Yikes!
