Final Score:.....York 9 FC.......6.......HFX Wanderers FC........2......

Attendance was not announced but the game stats handed out at the end of the game listed 3154.
From what I saw, it looked like the third largest crowd of the season after the season opener
and the Canadian Championship game against Montreal Impact. The Vaughan Soccer Club gave
out 500 tickets for their soccer family who came by their office earlier in the week.
The east side stands were still not opened. This was the place where the families were
supposed to sit when plans were made at the beginning of the season.

Generation IX members were a little light today because Toronto FC was playing FC Cincinnati
at 8:00pm. The CPL game was originally scheduled to start at 1:30pm when the schedule came
out but when the TV deal arrived, CBC insisted on a certain number of western team games even
through it's still morning in some places out there. Our game was flipped for the Valour FC
vs Calvalry FC game in Winnipeg. That was a good choice on paper as it turned out because
Cavalry had just knocked out MLS Vancouver Whitecaps on the road on Wednesday night so I'm
sure there were a lot of curious people tuning in to their first CPL game. That game ended
1-1 so for excitement this was the better game.

Referee Pierre-Luc Lauziere ended up giving out seven Yellow cards (two to York) in a game that
could have descended into a lot of hacking tackles if it got out of control with the score
out of reach.

Ryan Telfer played the role of the lone striker in the middle (replacing Simon Adjei who
wasn't in the 18) rather than his place on the wing and was very effective. Rodrigo Gattas
was on the wing at the start.

All kinds of records were set in today's game. This was the first game to have one team
score more than three goals in a single game. (This game was counted as the league's 48th).
It was the first game to have a player score a hat-trick with York's Rodrigo Gattas being
the first. He also accomplished the feat in the first half.

York scored enough goals that their two goals that were made on a bad backpass and an own-goal
deflection could be overlooked. These kind of errors this season have cost the team wins
and ties.

Both teams would be tired having played Wednesday night in the second leg of the Canadian
Championship. York 9 FC was beaten 1-0 in Montreal who won the series 3-2 and HFX Wanderers FC
tied Ottawa Fury 2-2 in Ottawa but lost the series 5-4.

In the standings (by the time I got home the game in Edmonton was almost over) at the end
of the today's triple header, the win by York 9 brings them to within one point of both
Forge FC and Cavalry FC who were both held to ties in their road games today. York's record
for the Fall Season improves to 3 wins, 0 ties, 2 losses for 9 points, good for third place.

HFX Wanderers' record falls to 1 win, 0 ties, 4 losses for 3 points. That's good for a tie
for fifth place with Pacific FC who have a game in hand. HFX haven't had a home game since
July 13th following up with trips to Hamilton, Victoria, and Ottawa. They still have a trip
to Edmonton before playing at home August 5th against Valour FC.

York's next game isn't until Saturday August 10th. Their road game on August 2nd was postponed
because Forge is hosting Deportiva Antigua from Guatemala in the CONCACAF League on Thursday
August 1st. Forge qualified by having the best record against Valour FC and FC Edmonton during
the Spring Season. Those three teams were the only ones allowed to compete because they were
either registered first (Forge and Valour because of their CFL Football ties, and FC Edmonton
because of their past existence in the NASL league). The CPL had to decide on a representative
quickly to enter the competition or the spot may have been taken by another country's team
and not be given back. I just wish them well as a nationalistic Canadian fan!

At the post game press conference, York head coach Jimmy Brennan said he advised his team to forget
about soccer and just rest. I saw three players and an assistant coach the next day watching
the League 1 Ontario top of the table clash in nearby Maple.
