Both sides come into Sunday’s tilt on two-game winning streaks in the early weeks of the Fall campaign. Recently crowned Spring season champions, Cavalry FC have picked up right where they left off in June, as they remain the only side yet to drop points in the Fall. Their latest triumph came at the hands of HFX Wanderers FC last weekend, when a late goal from Oliver Minatel gave them back-to-back wins to start the Fall. Fellow Fall contenders York9 FC have also been riding high in the month of July with two league wins on the bounce, and a spirited 2-2 draw against MLS side Montreal Impact in the Canadian Championship to boot. Jimmy Brennan’s side saw off Pacific FC at midweek, with a Manny Aparicio scorcher highlighting a solid night for the Nine Stripes as they continue to build towards a Fall season run. Following this clash, both teams will turn their focus to the Canadian Championship and the second legs of their Qualifying Round 3 ties on Wednesday, July 24. Cavalry will head to BC Place Stadium for their second leg against the Vancouver Whitecaps (10:30 p.m. ET, 7:30 p.m. PT, on OneSoccer), while Jimmy Brennan’s men will head up the 401 to Stade Saputo for their reverse leg against Montreal Impact (7:30 p.m. ET, on OneSoccer). KEYS TO THE MATCH Manuel Aparicio: A solid performance from the York9 skipper on Wednesday was capped off with an absolute stunner of a strike in the 20th minute. Aparicio found himself in the thick of most positive attacking moves in the Nine Stripes’ latest match against Pacific FC. If the dynamic midfielder can continue to collect the ball in gaps, turn, and run at the defence, he could be the source of a lot of problems for the Cavs in Sunday’s showdown. Home field advantage: Tommy Wheeldon Jr’s side has only conceded three goals in their last seven home matches at Spruce Meadows, and they were good enough for the joint-best defence in the Fall season (just seven goals conceded). Opportunities will likely be scarce for York9, as the Nine Stripes have four goals in their last four away games, so they may have to jump on anything that does come their way in a very difficult place for any CPL side to play. Revenge: When Cavalry sealed their place at the top of the table in the Spring competition it was against none other than York9 FC, a night that left a sour taste in the mouths of Jimmy Brennan’s players.
