Canadian Premier League

York9 FC ended FC Edmonton’s winning run at three matches, defeating the visiting Eddies 2-1
at York Lions Stadium on Sunday to record their first victory of the Fall portion of the 2019 CPL campaign.

Goals from Kyle Porter and Ryan Telfer on either end of a scintillating free kick by Ramon Soria
told the story of the day, with Edmonton nearly reversing the result in a wild 30 seconds of action
on either end of the field in the second half.

The Eddies started the first half in less-than-satisfactory form, turning over possession needlessly
in midfield and opening the door for Simon Adjei to run at goal, before finding an unmarked Porter
in the box. Porter made the most of his effort in the 13th minute, beating Connor James with a shot
tucked into the bottom corner, giving his team an early 1-0 lead.

It would be a lead York9 held through the hour mark, but as the Eddies grew into the match, that advantage
wouldn’t hold, with Soria scoring an unaided free kick past Nathan Ingham from well outside the box,
restoring the tie at 1-1 in the 67th minute.

However, that wouldn’t be the last bit of action in the second half, as Edmonton nearly managed to find
a second, rattling Ingham’s post with a shot on goal … which rebounded to Manny Aparicio, who picked
out Telfer on the counter-attack. Telfer burst forward, beating his marker, and finished coolly,
giving the Nine Stripes a 2-1 lead in the span of a 30-second back-and-forth in the 80th minute of play.

Telfer looked to have scored a second late in the match, but the play was adjudged to be offside. As such,
the Nine Stripes took the win with just the one-goal margin, though head coach Jimmy Brennan won’t mind
what the scoreline read, in so far as his side bagged all three points. York9 returns to action
on Wednesday against visiting Pacific FC (July 17, 7:00 p.m. ET, on OneSoccer), while Edmonton returns
home to host Valour on the same evening (July 17, 7:00 p.m. MT, 9:00 p.m. ET, on OneSoccer).

Three key performers

Ryan Telfer (York9 FC)
Continued his hot form off the back of a goal-scoring performance against the Montreal Impact with
another goal at a critical juncture, delivering all three points for his side and nearly adding a second,
though from an offside position.

Ramon Soria (FC Edmonton)
Beyond his free kick goal, which was equal measures well-placed and fortuitous, Soria was also
an ever-present body in the middle of a congested field, running through York9’s midfield-heavy formation
and containing threats where he saw them.

Simon Adjei (York9 FC)
Tested James’ goal on four direct occasions, and recorded an assist on Porter’s goal – Adjei did well
throughout his time on the pitch, providing an attacking outlet for his teammates and playing
in-between the lines with regularity and poise.
