Attendance was not announced but the canpl.ca website listed 2500 which was greatly exaggerated from the people who actually showed up. It could be the season ticket base. The weather turned out to be nice but we were warned by weather reports three days earlier that this would be the night we'd get another thunderstorm. That forecast was eventually pushed back to overnight and it rained overnight and all day Thursday but scares like that all but kill the walk up crowd. Another weeknight game and I barely saw enough children to be ball-kids. We'll see this upcoming Saturday. Since mid-month we had/will have home games Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Wednesday the 29th. Let's see all those youth clubs fill the eastern stands which were closed tonight. From June 15th to July 1st (the end of the Spring season), York will have played six games in twenty days. (Good thing that the middle four are home games). The Fall season looks a bit more stretched out for all clubs assuming none of them push much farther in the Canadian Championship. Both teams had enough chances to make this a 3-3 game so a tie is a fair result. More accurate shooting would help besides the excellent goaltending. Joey Di Chiara made his return to the starting line up for the first time since the opening game. He said after the game that he can feel the team chemistry building. Head coach Jimmy Brennan says he made him fight for his position as a starter and he enjoys having a problem like that. Cornerback Roger Thompson made the subs bench tonight as he's been recovering from injury. Next up is midfielder Wataru Murofushi who I saw arrive at the game but he didn't even make the bench because he'd hurt his shoulder. Manny Aparicio had the best chance of the night with a header from close range destined for the top left corner but headed away by a defender. York continues to have scoring troubles although the defence is sound. There's no way Pacific's Ryan McCurdy should co-lead York 9's scoring with two own-goals. That's tied with York's Rodrigo Gattas and both of his were from Penalty kicks. Brennan said they just have to more clinical in the box. York outshot FC Edmonton 16-6 tonight and more importantly 5-2 for shots on target. Edmonton had a short bench with a choice of only four outfield players. The back up goalie was penned in on the game sheet. He is Chris Ezoua from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology although he's listed as being born in Mississauga. No sign of Dylan Powley who we saw two Wednesday's ago when FC Edmonton was here in Second Qualifying round of the Canadian Championship and was in net for the three set piece goals that York put past him to just about win the series on the first game. The result leaves both teams having only won one game in league play. FC Edmonton are in worse shape if that's possible because they won in their first game ever and haven't been able to repeat. The HFX Wanderers vs Cavalry FC match had started one hour before ours did. Cavalry won to go 7-0-0. They had eliminated all the other teams except Forge FC before this match even started. The encouragement for the other five teams to keep going is although the Fall season winner will be the other entrant in the Championship game (or series) in October, if Cavalry wins that too, the overall second place finisher will be the other finalist so a win tonight would have helped York's season campaign. The Fall season resets all teams at 0-0-0 for a first place run. I received an answer from club officials tonight about the race car seats still being pushed back against the west side stands rather than being almost at the sideline as illustrated on the pre-season club brochures. The facility won't let them drag them across the track so they have to stay where they are. Next year is the new promise. I've heard that the field will be widened by tearing up the track and widening the field westwards almost up to the stands and pulling the east stands over the eastern section of the track. Sounds promising. I like my front row seat in the stands as it's raised about 6 feet and I can see over the shallow hockey sign boards and see the cornerkicks rather than sitting at completely ground level. I still remember the $200 price difference that scared me away. I heard that the OneSoccer broadcast messed up at the 85 minute mark. I could hear a scraping sound like a microphone dragging or stereo speakers being moved but was in the dark until I read about it on the way home. I could have guessed about two hours earlier they may be a problem as the duo singing 'O Canada' had their mic keep cutting off and their sound delayed. This gave me flashbacks to all the bad mics I've seen at Varsity, Centennial and especially Esther Shiner stadiums. They sounded great in tonight's rehearsal. It turns out they were an adult brother and sister. I wonder what happened to the ten year old girl who was supposed to have been awarded the position? When I got home I was checking to see if tonight's game had been posted on the OneSoccer site. In the other room I could hear Terry Dunfield giving some pregame analysis on the Canada vs Mexico Gold Cup game. I didn't realize he had done the commentary of tonight's game because I didn't see him at York so he was probably calling from a downtown Toronto studio.
