Attendance was not announced but it looked smaller than their only other weekend home game which was padded out by visiting Forge FC fans who drove up from Hamilton. Also that weekend was the novelty of their league home opener and the weather looked nice (although thunderstorms were predicted and they occured in the second half). Today the weather stayed dry until the evening when it rained. The forecast was pushed back a few hours because a few days ago there were storms predicted for today's game time. I noticed that the premium priced 'race car' seats were still pushed to the side of the track right against the wall of the main stands. That was not how they were pictured in the stadium renditions. My SSH seat is therefore only one row behind them and is upraised so I have a better view of the field. [Late news: The league site published 2908 which is a lot higher than outside estimators so the discrepancy could be season seat holders who didn't show up. The press corps was light too. This game was shown live on CBC stations which was the reason it was moved up an hour earlier than the original schedule. Just as well to not overlap with other CPL games and the Canadian National teams both playing today at the Women's World Cup and the men for the start of the Gold Cup. The wind was so strong it blew the empty players' bench/rain shelters over before the game-- but only the York benches so I wondered at the time if it was an omen. It took about ten grounds crew to lift and reset them back in place then some stayed behind to act as human paperweights. The win hung balls up on cornerkicks and crosses it they were sent too high. Sprinklers were on before the game to water the field to slow down the turf to keep balls in play. York goalie Nathan Ingham again was our choice for Man of the Match. He stopped the Penalty kick which could have changed the momentum of the game so early if Ben Fisk had scored. His other big stop was at 76 minutes when Zachary Verhoven rushed down the left wing and sent a cross into the box and Marcus Haber one-touched a midair shot from 10 yards up the middle that had Ingham make a point blank save. Haber took over as captain after Fisk came off at 60 minutes. Both Verhoven and Haber entered the game within a minute of each other. Referee David Barrie gave out two Yellow cards during the game both in the second half for pushes in the back that injured York players.. There will still be some haters who say York won on an 'own goal'. That goal off Ryan McCurdy is the second time that's happened benefitting York. In Victoria, an own goal off McCurdy helped York to rally to a 2-2 tie last month. York head coach Jim Brennan said at the post game press conference that every team enjoys a home field advantage and now it's their turn. Brennan credited defenders Morey Doner and Diyaeddine Abzi for their long runs up the field as outlets to get the team out of situations when they were pressed in their own end. He called them 'three lungs' for their endless energy. York had played here on Wednesday night. Since Pacific were knocked out in the first round of the Canadian Championship they didn't play the last two Wednesdays and since no CPL team played last weekend and with a bye week at the end of May, today was only Pacific's third game since May 22nd. Still they only brought five substitutes. Players from their 23 man roster out due to injury were Marcel De Jong, Hendrik Starostzik, Jose Hernandez, and Nolan Wirth. York wins their first league game of the season in this their sixth game. Their record improves to 1 win, 3 ties, and 2 losses for 6 points. With games played later in the day (a triple header for OneSoccer subscribers) they passed both Pacific FC and FC Edmonton into fifth place in the seven team league. They still have three home games of their four games remaining. Both Cavalry and Forge FC won today to leave the top two teams unchanged. Forge FC are 2 points behind but have played two more games so time has just about run out. Forge's win clinches a spot in the CONCACAF League in league play between them, Valour FC, and FC Edmonton. Next year the berth will be given to the winner of this season's CPL Championship. The loss eliminates Pacific FC from winning the Spring Season championship. It is only a ten game competition. I was assured at today's game that the standings will be reset for the longer Fall Season which starts after the first of July. There's still a reason to earn points in this Spring Season as if Cavalry FC who are most likely to win the Spring and also win the Fall (and why not as they have won all league and Canadian Championship games so far), the team with the second best record chosen by combining both will be the other team in the season end CPL Championship game (or games as it hasn't been decided if it will be a two game series). Next York game is Wednesday night against FC Edmonton at York Lions Stadium at 7:00pm. This will be the third Wednesday in a row they've met but this time a 'League' game as their last two meetings was the Qualifying Round 2 series of the Canadian Championship.
