January 7, 2019 York9 FC signs defender Roger Thompson by Nate Hershenfeld, York9 FC York9 Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of defender Roger Thompson. The 6 foot 4 defensive stalwart is returning to Canada after playing in Sweden, Finland, and Germany since 2012. Manager Jimmy Brennan was particularly high on adding Thompson to the squad. “This is a player we’ve been watching for some time. We know him very well, he’s a local guy that’s acquired a ton of experience playing in Europe.” Brennan said. “We want a big presence at the back who can command the back line and control the game in front of him. He’s also good with his feet for a big guy, so that’s the presence we were looking for. He’s going to be a huge asset for us.” Thompson himself was enthusiastic about the creation of a Canadian top division, especially one with a club close to his Brampton home. “Right away I was excited, and I was trying to find out what the teams were and if there was a team in the area. I spoke a lot with (assistant coach Carmine Isacco) who told me early in the summer there might be a team in York Region if I was interested.” Thompson also had two seasons playing with the Cincinnati Bearcats and happy to see avenues open up for Canadian student-athletes as well. “The biggest thing 16, 17, 18 year old players had to look for was moving to the States and going to play university football there, but now there’s no need to go there. You can go through the school system here and get to a professional club like York9.”
