Markham, ON (August 23, 2018) – The Canadian Premier League represents more than a chance for local soccer players to watch professionals in their own backyards. Markham SC head coach Tommy Bianchi says York 9 FC’s inaugural season could spark a “Vince Carter effect” as Canadian kids will soon have more soccer pros to look up to. “We saw a whole bunch of Canadian kids now get into the NBA because of the imprint he had with the Raptors early on,” Bianchi said of Carter. “I think (the CPL) is going to add that inspiration factor where kids get to see local players playing professionally and they now have something to guide them towards. “I think they’re going to have a really good understanding of the level of play by watching it live and seeing what it takes to be a professional footballer in Canada.” Led my head coach Jimmy Brennan, York 9 FC intends to heavily scout York Region for young talent — some of which could have connections to Markham SC — ahead of its inaugural season in 2019. “York Region is a hot-bed for talent,” Bianchi added. “We can support a pro franchise, in my opinion, quite easily.” At his introductory press conference two weeks ago, Brennan suggested his goal is to one day trot out a starting 11 made up entirely of players from York Region. “We’re hoping that some of our better players get funnelled into the York 9 FC team,” Bianchi said. “If that doesn’t happen in Year 1, maybe down the line some of our Markham players get the opportunity to go in and play for York 9.” York 9 FC is currently accepting membership deposits at york9fc.canpl.ca ahead of the CPL’s inaugural 2019 season. The club has vowed to work closely with the nine municipalities that make up York Region, as well as the 15 clubs that reside inside its boundaries.
