Gameday Report: July 3, Week 15 By USLLeagueOne.com Staff, 07/04/19, 12:15AM EDT Tucson tops Toronto to climb into playoff race HIGHLIGHTS #TUCvTOR | 07-03-2019 fc tucson (3) v toronto fc ii (1) Match Center FC Tucson defeated Toronto FC II, 3-0, Wednesday night at Kino Sports Complex in Arizona. Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu opened the scoring in the fifth minute, smacking a half volley into the top corner from 20 yards out after Kyle Bjornethun’s long throw was partially cleared by a Toronto defender. The goal was Wheeler-Omiunu’s second of the season. Devin Vega doubled Tucson’s lead in the 19th minute after a tidy exchange inside with Raheem Sommersall sprung him free in the penalty area. Sommersall drove at Toronto’s back four before finding Vega with a square pass. Vega took his first touch around an on-rushing defender and tucked his third goal of the season into the back of the net. Jordan Jones made it three for the hosts seven minutes later, slotting a shot from distance past goalkeeper Yann Alexandre Fillion to score his second goal of the season. Carlos Merancio Valdez was credited with the assists on Jones’ goal. Bjornethun scored an own goal in the 77th minute, knocking a Luca Petrasso cross into his own net to help Toronto cut into the deficit, but that’s as close as the match would get as Tucson walked away with the 3-1 win. Takeaways: QUICK START: After a lengthy break from League One action, FC Tucson came out of the gates firing on Wednesday night. Darren Sawatzky’s side scored three goals inside of the opening 26 minutes to suck the life out of the young Toronto FC II side. The win improves Tucson’s home record to 3-1-3 on the year and moves them into sixth place in the League One standings. Following Wednesday’s win, FCT will hit the road for six straight matches before playing seven of its last eight at home to close out the season. ROAD WOES: Wednesday’s loss was Toronto’s fifth on the road this season, tying FC Tucson for the most by a club in League One. TFCII has played nine of its opening 14 games away from home this season and have managed just eight points from those matches. With their last win coming on June 8th, the Reds will be looking forward to getting back home next Friday when they host South Georgia Tormenta FC in the first of five straight matches at BMO Training Ground. 4-2-3-1 4-1-4-1 FC Tucson Toronto FC II 3 1 July 3, 2019 10:00 PM Venue Kino Sports Complex Attendance 1,772 Referee Karen Callado FC Tucson 18 Merancio Valdez GK 2 Ledbetter DF 23 Bjornethun DF 77' OWN GOAL 12 Venter (C) DF 22 Batista DF 6 Sommersall MF 71' subbed out 11 Cox MF 28 Wheeler-Omiunu MF 5' GOAL 15 Vega MF 19' GOAL 16 Jambga MF 99 Jones FW 26' GOAL, 90+2' subbed out Substitutes 30 Guerrero 13 Hauswirth 90+2' subbed in 3 Terrón 33 Wakasa 95 Howell 71' subbed in 9 Delgado 19 Wright Manager Sawatzky Toronto FC II 30 Fillion GK 88 West DF 85' subbed out 57 Mohammed DF 36 Ramos Mingo DF 65' Yellow card 42 Bunk-Andersen DF 59 Okello MF 19 Dorsey MF 50 Srbely MF 41' Yellow card, 60' subbed out 43 Ovalle (C) MF 58 Faria MF 64' subbed out 77 Perruzza FW Substitutes 90 Silva 81 Antonoglou 53 Nelson 64' subbed in 39 Petrasso 60' subbed in 37 Waja 45 Russel-Rowe 85' subbed in Manager Rabasca TUC TFC 43.9% Possession 56.1% 54.7% Duels success rate 45.3% 40.7% Aerial duels won 59.3% 7 Interceptions 19 3 Offsides 0 2 Corners 3 405 Passes 510 74 Long passes 49 78.8% Passing accuracy 86.9% 65.4% Passing acc in opp half 76.8% 10 Crosses 16 30.0% Crossing accuracy 18.8% 3 Goals 1 11 Shots 16 5 Shots on target 4 2 Blocked shots 2 5 Shots outside the box 6 6 Shots inside the box 10 45.5% Shooting accuracy 25.0% 18 Tackles 11 66.7% Tackles success rate 81.8% 13 Clearances 16 6 Fouls conceded 9 0 Yellow cards 2 0 Red cards 0
