Attendance was announced as 17126 which enough to fill both sides of the lower bowl. 18000 used to be the size of this stadium for the first few years of Toronto FC before it was increased to 30000. Holding the game here wasn't so popular on the message boards as they expected a sell out of 40K if it was held in Vancouver. I would see no way they'd play there on artificial turf, the travel distance for the European club based team players and the possible rent-free use of this field for the CSA since the federal government help finance this stadium before the 2007 U-20 World Cup. This stadium has the official designation of 'Canada's National Stadium'. Canada beat the USA for the first time in 34 years said all the media outlets. I was thinking well it was because they don't play very often but the outlets said they've had 17 games until tonight since the last Canadian win. I knew more about the national women's teams because they play about once a year. This was the USA's first game away from home after nine in charge with Greg Berhalter as new coach. Many in the press including an ex-USA national team coach called the whole Nations League competition a waste of time for the Americans who should be playing South American and European teams. That may have been stoked by how easy the USA defeated Cuba--7-0--in their game earlier in the week. That result put them at an advantage because Canada beat Cuba by a combined 7-0 in their two games last month and the USA still has to play Cuba one more time next month in US Virgin Islands because Cuba can't use their national stadium. I don't know about the USA players being arrogant but the American reporters sure were with them fleeing the press conference once their head coach held his press conference, not staying to hear Canadian head coach Jonn Herdman. Herdman made some bold substitutions in this game. One was not his choice when midfielder Mark Anthony Kaye went down at the 4 minute mark and he brought in midfielder Liam Fraser rather than a defender. Bold as this was Fraser's first international game. He has been the understudy to Michael Bradley on Toronto FC for a few years now and mostly gets on the field when Bradley is away with his national team. I've been able to watch Fraser with Toronto FC II build up minutes. Herdman's choice at 65 minutes was by his choice. Canada had just taken the lead three minutes earlier and he brought in forwards David Junior Hoilett and Lucas Cavallini for fellow forwards Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David rather than bringing in two defenders and bunkering down to try to preserve their slim lead. The offensive threats kept the American defenders further back because they had to worry about counterattacks getting to fresh legged forwards. The Americans subbed out their star player Christian Pulisic at 59 minutes for what the US head coach Greg Berhalter said at the post game press conference said was 'flu-like symptons' and he wanted to "inject some energy into the game". He said Canada was using a 'diamond formation' while later Canadian head coach John Herdman said they were playing a 'box'. Referee Daneon Parchment from Jamaica gave out five Yellow cards with a few melees but a let a lot of infractions go which is unusual in CONCACAF officiating. Milan Borjan earned the shutout for Canada with only one bit save. The defenders did a great job of limiting the USA to few shots and none from in close. CPL players Nik Ledgerwood and Marco Carducci were scheduled outside the gates to sign autographs and pose for pictures but I was too early and wanted to get inside. Again for this game there were no players from that league in the game. Seven of the Canadians play in the MLS. The USA didn't 'have' to win this game as they are assured of keeping a place in the top six in CONCACAF and getting into 'The Hex'. Canada is just outside those places and a win was crucial to claw into one of those bottom positions. Not being in the top six means going into groups on the around 35 remaining teams and coming out as the sole survivor of those playdowns. The winner than plays the fourth place finisher of the Hex and the winner of that has to play another federation's qualifier from places like South America, Oceania, or Asia. Canada appeared tonight to play with more desire because of that threat. I didn't expect I'd get approved to watch from the press box as I'd been warned about the strong demand for places from American outlets but I ended up with a good seat in the second row--had to lean one way or another--to see the south side net. I noticed the halftime stats hadn't printed out the USA's McKennie Yellow card at 33 minutes and got a 'thank you' for pointing that out so I was glad I could help.
