Result and details of the Sunday July 1, 2018 MLS game between Toronto FC and New York Red Bulls played at BMO Field in Toronto at 4:30PM. 3 min...NYRB Kemar Lawrence GOAL...NYRB Sean Davis cornerkick from right has TFC player at 12 yards in center of box head away. Lawrence at 25 yards on left blasts low shot through crowd of players. NYRB Bradley Wright-Phillips lifts his leg so ball can go under him at 7 yards and goalie Alex Bono squats down to handle it at 3 yards and ball trickles through his hands and into right corner of net. 74 min...TFC Jonathan Osorio has 10 yard shot saved by sprawling goalie Luis Robles at 3 yards on right post and NYRB Aaron Long eventually clears ball behind end line for cornerkick. A VAR decision is made after much delay. NYRB Tim Parker who fell near the ball after a push by TFC Marky Delgado was ruled to have touched the ball on the ground with his hand before he was pushed and a Penalty kick is given to TFC. 77 min...TFC Sebastian Giovinco blasts Penalty kick low to left and goalie flies to left and makes stop. The ball bounces to the left side of the box and a defender clears. TFC Jonathan Osorio can't draw a Penalty kick when he goes down trying to chase in after the rebound. Final Score:...Toronto FC.......0.....New York Red Bulls........1........ Attendance was announced as 26363 on this very hot and humid day with a record breaking 43C temperaturd when the humidity was factored in. The sun was bright and burning for us in the east stands. I could hardly see the pregame fireworks. I don't usually buy anything when I'm down here but got off the streetcar early and bought a bottle of water for before the game (can't take it into the game) and then eventually bought two bottles at the concession stand $5.50 each (vs $2.25 outside)--no wonder I don't buy anything in the stadium) and got by. I also had the TFC II game to watch as well but an usherette invited us to sit on the shady west stands for that one although attendance was only 244 for that game. Our tickets at the beginning of the season were printed as a 4:30pm start but the television networks were covering the World Cup and the Croatia vs Denmark game went into extra time and then Penalty kicks. The video board was playing a portion of the game until the extra time but they were then committed to their usual pregame videos and intros. The game kicked off at 5:06pm so fans were already baking in the sun. Because it was a holiday weekend, many of the fans I recognize weren't there and tickets were given/sold to friends or strangers. Referee Hilario Grajeda called a water break at 31 minutes and right after the Penalty kick attempt. Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was named as defender Nick Hagglund. That is his second MOTM in a row for home games as he had two goals to help salvage a tie with D.C. United last time out. This game it was some key defensive plays in which few TFC players shined. We thought we'd seen the last of Sebastian Giovinco taking Penalty kicks and his record falls to 1 for 4 this season. With Jozy Altidore still injured, the spot kicking has fallen to Victor Vazquez but he was injured in midweek training and didn't play. Defender/winger Gregory van der Wiel also was injured midweek (they must have rough practices!) Giovinco was being booed by fans in my section not just after the Penalty kick but they were upset by his walking back from failed rushes. A video circulating of the winning NYCFC goal in last week's game showed TFC players jogging back on an NYCFC long rush upfield for the score and started the gloomsters coming out of the woodwork. The real star of the game was NYRB Luis Robles. Saving the Penalty kick was key to the victory but he had many other win saving saves especially during the second half. There were three Canadians who played in the TFC II game on Wednesday night who moved back to the first team. Jordan Hamilton scored the tieing goal in that game and almost had the winner with a shot off the goalpost near the end. Today he played the entire 90 minutes. Ryan Telfer played the second half of the TFC II game and today he came in at 80 minutes. Liam Fraser who was captain of TFC II on Wednesday did not get into today's game. Bringing these players back left TFC II bare for tonight's game. Today TFC used only two Canadian starters--Jordan Hamilton and stalwart midfielder (leading scorer this year) Jonathan Osorio. Defender Ashtone Morgan came in at 33 minutes to replace the injured Jason Hernandez. Ryan Telfer and Jay Chapman came in at 80 minutes replacing more defensive players when TFC were desparately trying to get a tying goal. Fraser and forward Tosaint Ricketts were unused subs. Little used players Ben Spencer and Alan Marinao Mino were both released by TFC. Their salaries were minimal so I can't see how the club will obtain an impact player during the summer transfer window. A halftime contest including a t-shirt toss and with so many empty seats caused by fans fleeing for under the stands for some relief from the sun, my row was almost empty and a shirt was bobbled and dropped from a row above mine and I picked it up. Hmm large size--should fit in well. Today though I was using it as a towel to dry my face off. The result leaves TFC in tenth place with a 4 wins, 9 losses, and 3 ties record for 15 points. As this was the last Eastern Conference game of the weekend they can see they're now 8 points out of the final playoff spot as Chicago won their game Saturday night and move up to sixth place. NYRB win improves their record to 10 wins, 4 losses, 2 ties for 32 points and they jump from fourth to second. TFC goes on the road to play Minnesota United on Wednesday night for a 4th of July celebration and a gap from the World Cup.
