Result and details of the Wednesday June 13, 2018 MLS game between Toronto FC and D.C. United
played at BMO Field in Toronto at 8:00PM. 11 min...DCU Yamil Asad GOAL...DCU Luciano Acosta and Paul Arriola play a give and go at TFC 45 yard line on right getting around TFC Michael Bradley. Arriola ends up rolling pass forward from 40 yard line to Acosta up right and he receives ball at 30 yard line, runs forward to 15 yard line and then sends low cross to middle past TFC Eric Zavaleta. DCU Darren Mattocks has already ran past the 12 yard line but Asad trailing sends low 12 yarder around TFC Auro and into right corner of net past diving goalie Alex Bono. 16 min...DCU Paul Arriola GOAL...DCU Zoltan Stieber rushes down left wing on 3 on 2 rush and crosses in from 25 yard line on left and charging Arriola flies forward and heads midair 10 yarder from right side of box and ball bounces past diving goalie at 3 yards and into right side of goal. 44 min...DCU Darren Mattocks GOAL...A DCU low cross from 20 yard line wide right of box deflects off defender and bounces over for TFC Eric Zavaleta at 12 yards in middle of box. Zavaleta settles ball down and starts to walk it out of box. Mattocks comes in behind him and bumps him off ball and taps ball over to DCU Luciano Acosta who steps around sliding TFC Ryan Telfer and Acosta is bumped by retreating TFC Michael Bradley, but Acosta as Bradley runs by, taps pass over to Mattocks on left and from 7 yards while even with left post shoots about halfway up into right side of net past goalie standing his ground at 3 yards on left. 55 min...TFC Jonathan Osorio GOAL...TFC Victor Vazquez short run on left to 25 yard line and he pushes ball forward and further left for charging TFC Ryan Telfer. He slides at 7 yard line just outside left side of box and centers rolling cross to Osorio who one touches 9 yard shot while aligned with left post forward and into top right corner of net with goalie David Ousted stuck on left post. 63 min...TFC Victor Vazquez GOAL...TFC Nicolas Hasler at 28 yard line on right rolls centering pass to TFC Sebastian Giovinco. Giovinco runs forward then cuts shot from 20 yards on right around defender and ball hits base of left post beyond flying goalie. The ball bounces out to 10 yards in middle of box and Vazquez blasts into middle of net just under bar over goalie who had not been able to completely stand up yet. 85 min...TFC Nick Hagglund GOAL...TFC Sebastian Giovinco with ball at 30 yards in middle but defender near him rolls pass forward and to left and TFC Jonathan Osorio steps over ball on edge of box and ball rolls over to TFC Justin Morrow at 3 yard line on left edge of box who chips cross and Hagglund at 6 yards in center of box jumps up and over DCU Zoltan Stieber to head ball into right side of net beyond flying goalie. 89 min...DCU Yamil Asad GOAL...DCU goalie takes long goalkick and has TFC defender or DCU player at 45 yard line near right sideline flicks header downfield. DCU Patrick Mullins receives ball at 35 yard line on right and runs down wing slowing at top corrner of box when TFC Michael Bradley is cutting off his angle. TFC Gregory van der Wiel runs past him as Mullins steps by Bradley at 20 yards to roll ball to center and back to DCU Ian Harkes at 24 yards in middle. Harkes rolls through ball pass to Mullins charging forward and he rolls cross from right edge of 6 yard box past sliding goalie at 4 yards and Asad alone on left taps 2 yard shot from even with left post into center of empty net. Because TFC Justin Morrow retreated to pursue Mullins, Asad was not offside as he waited for ball to roll over to him. 91 min...TFC Nick Hagglund GOAL...TFC Victor Vazquez cornerkick from left is over players in box. TFC Sebastian Giovinco rescues ball on right end line who steps into box and and crosses to middle where DCU defender flicks header from 5 yards out of 6 yard box. Retreating TFC Justin Morrow is a step ahead of defender and crosses to left where TFC Victor Vazquez turns and taps pass to TFC Jonathan Osorio who chips cross from 15 yard line on left and Hagglund at 5 yards just wide of right post heads ball down and ball bounces across box into left corner of net with goalie trapped on right post. Final Score:...Toronto FC.......4.....D.C. United........4........ Interesting that are our cardboard tickets outlining great moments of last season were called "The Comeback". Attendance wasn't announced but it was published on the MLS website as 23,011. That's a small number but this was a weeknight game and was rescheduled from its original April 7th date. The game was postponed while TFC were in their CONCACAF Championship Cup run. If DCU hadn't been so co-operative, they had a better chance of winning with Colorado and Houston insisting their game be played (OK they were home games so it would be though for them to ask their own fans to reschedule), TFC put out 'B' teams and were beaten. DCU haven't played a proper home game this season as they wait for their new stadium to open. DCU are last in the East as they were last year. It doesn't appear English star Wayne Rooney has signed for the team. Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was named as Nick Hagglund. That was an easy choice as he scored two goals on headers, both tieing the game at that point. Alex Bono had to be sharp in the first half or it could have been a 5-0 deficit by the break. I gave the score as 'Wind At Your Back' 7 'Against The Wind' 1 as that was the breakdown of the strong wind from the north. I somewhat expeccted that DCU would only be able to try and hold on as goalkicks into the wind were hanging and dropping 30 yards short of where they'd be on a calm night. DCU forward Darren Mattocks and goalie David Ousted both played many years for Vancouver Whitecaps in past seasons. OK reality check! This opponent was the last place team. Neither team moves up the standings enough to threaten a playoff team although Orlando City who hold on to the sixth and last playoff spot, lost their sixth game in a row. Because Montreal was the team that beat them tonight, the Impact leap over TFC in the standings (actually tie them) because they have more wins but TFC has two games in hand. The top five teams in the East are starting to open up a gap on the others. This is the last MLS date for the leageue with six games tonight. The teams take a one and a half week break for the first part of the World Cup. TFC had no players leave to play in the tournament. Many of the American MLS teams have another round of their US Cup competition to get through. Thanks to this game being rescheduled I missed the return leg of the preliminatry series in the Canadian Championship between Oakville Blue Devils (the 2017 League 1 Ontario champions) and AS Blainville (the 2017 PLSQ champions from Quebec). ASB led the series 2-1 but OBD had scored an important road goal. Because OBD's home stadium in Oakville has no stadium lights and the mandate is the game had to be played tonight, the game was moved to The Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan which is a lot closer to my home then even BMO Field. The winner of this series plays the USL Ottawa Fury and the winner of that series advance to play Toronto FC. [Late news on my way home was I heard AS Blainville won 1-0 to win the series. There were stories of the high winds limiting good play so it sounds like the conditions were worse than BMO Field.] This morning FIFA decided on the 'United' bid over that of Morocco for the 2026 World Cup. This means that Canada with co-host along with the USA and Mexico. That means that BMO Field will be enlarged to 50000 seats or more to comply with the WC minimum standards. With TFC having only two Canadian starters and two Canadians on the bench now that the foreigners are returning after recovering from injuries, it means that the MLS will not be giving enough Canadians playing time to stock the National team and the new Canadian Premier League starting play next April is needed more than ever.
