Final Score:...Toronto FC.....0.....FC Dallas.......1.......
Attendance was not announced but was published on the MLS site as 27549. Nothing wrong with that! It was their second annual Pride Night. I don't remember last year's event. This is not at the same time as the City of Toronto's Pride events. Man of the Match (which is always a TFC player) was named as Auro. He played well on the wing putting in crosses. The stats list TFC has leading Dallas on this at 34 to 4! Just as good I'd say was Ryan Telfer who did the same thing from the other side including some through the 6 yard box. Dallas led TFC in accumulating Yellow cards 7 to 2. It must have been a record for time wasting and not giving 10 yards on a freekick rather than rough tackles. There were also a lot of real and feigned injuries by Dallas players although referee Chris Penso added 7 minutes of injury time and that's when he really gave out the cards. The goalie was slow to take goalkicks and to pick up the ball and then dove to smother it. There is nothing wrong as the road team from doing this to protect the lead. They don't have to entertain--just get the points. TFC starting goalie Alex Bono is away with the US National team in Philadelphia for their game against Bolivia on Monday night. There were no faults in Clint Irwin's game. Caleb Patterson-Sewell was brought up from TFC II to be his backup. Michael Bradley was back on defence right from the start. Liam Fraser took Bradley's spot as defensive midfielder and played without any mistakes. He didn't hold the ball at all but just immediately passed off to the closest player. It was Fraser's first home start after starting in Colorado and Houston. I've watched him play for TFC II since 2015. Tosaint Ricketts got the start tonight. He usually comes on after the 60 minute mark to play forward against the tired defence of the opposition. It was he was gassed by the 60 minute mark and came off for Jay Chapman. Ricketts had the best chance of the game when at 33 minutes TFC Auro crossed from the right and TFC Victor Vazquez twisted a header at 8 yards up the middle which the goalie dove to the left post to stop and Ricketts at 5 yards with the loose ball at his feet pushed the ball to the fallen goalie to smother. The shutout play by Jesse Gonzalez tonight on his 23rd birthday (I didn't find that out until I got home and it made the next day's headlines. His biggest save was stopping Giovinco's Penalty kick to the right with him guessing correctly. Giovinco had shot low left in early attempts this year in league annd cCL play then finally scored low to the right so tried again. It was mentioned that Gonzalez is a Dallas 'home-grown' player working his way through their academy system. Their system is one of the MLS's best with lots of players sold on to other leagues. They don't have a USL team though so draft pick Adonijah Reid was leant to his home province team Ottawa Fury of the USL. Dallas gave up two late goals last week in a 2-2 home tie against Vancouver Whitecaps. There was an own goal and a Penalty kick or Dallas should have won that game. I thought Victor Vazquez was going to be the Penalty kick man but that didn't last long. Giovinco has only scored two goals in MLS league play this season. They are now one for three on PKs in league play. TFC haven't won a league game this year when the other team scores first. They outshot Dallas 23-12 with shots on target 9-3 and led 8 to 1 in cornerkicks. They also held 71% possession. TFC now has to wait the rest of the weekend to see if the playoff line moves up or if they get passed by another team. They are 7 points to the playoff line held by New England with both teams having played 11 games. TFC have been beaten by Western Conference teams Colorado and Houston on the road and Seattle and now Dallas at home with only a victory against Real Salt Lake at home. TFC are the great equalizer! They are making the Western Conference teams not look so weak. Next Saturday they are away to Columbus Crew. TFC's next home match in Wednesday June 13th against D.C. United. That's to make up the game postponed from April 7th while TFC were on their extended CCL run. I think DCU should have insisted on playing like Colorado and Houston did to be able to play against the TFC second stringers. Now they have to play against a full strength side during the World Cup break.
