Attendance was announced as 25587 on this cold night with the weather just below the freezing mark and dropping quickly now that it was dark. There was no snow as had been threatened in weather forecasts. Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was announced as Jonathan Osorio who scored the winning goal on a backheeler in the last minutes of the game (3 minutes of extra time). Tigres were suspectable last round to allowing late goals in the last round as they allowed two late goals in the first leg of the Round of 16 against Herediano for a 2-2 tie. Tigres won the second game 3-1 at home to advance. We'll see if Tigres does better at home in this round. Their star that I read about was Frenchman Andre Pierre Gignac and he only subed in at halftime arfter a poor outing by Ecuadoran Enner Valencia. I thought TFC had to have three Canadians in their lineup even if they were on the bench but only starter Jonathan Osorio and bench player Tosaint Ricketts were listed. It looked like striker Ricketts was ready to come in but he was called back to the bench and instead defender Nick Hagglund replaced defender Eric Zavaleta who was injured a minute before. That may have been to protect the tie but the lone Canadian \scored the winning goal. This is three games now where the Osorio has been the only Canadian on the field. The field was in bad shape with the grass behind chopped up even before the treams came out for warmups. At halftime the sprinklers were put on and groundskeepers stomped around the holes but it made it look worse. I don't know if it was to break up smooth passing in a ground game or not. TFC had to play Saturday at home in the opening week of the MLS season but have this weekend off to prepare for the second leg on Tuesday night. Tigres schedule was they played last Saturday away against Veracruz in a 2-0 win. This Saturday Tigres play at home against Club Tijuana (who lost against MLS team New York Red Bulls 2-0 at home last night in their CONCACAF game). MLS really has jiggled the schedule to help their CCL participating teams. Neither team had many spectacular chances. TFC eventually had five shots on target while Tigres only had two. Official first half stats had each team only having one shot on target. TFC is still showing a preseason form of messing up the few sccoring opportunities of making unforced errors of errant passes. Sebastian Giovinco had two freekicks from right where he likes them and put one just just high and wide left from 30 yards and a 20 yarder into the player wall. TFC showed the best of disipline by not taking a Yellow card for the third game in a row. Tigres players combined for three Yellows. I was surprised that Tigres couldn't get many scoring chances. They were burned on offside calls seven times in this game (TFC only once). Their timing on forward runs was off. The PA guy even announced the wrong number for the 50/50 draw as he first read out the winner as the amount of prize money in the pot.
