Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was announced as goalie Alex Bono. With no TFC players scoring, he was an easy choice but he earned the honour by making a few key saves. He was leveled at 89 minutes by Dominique Badji as they both jumped for a cross from the left. Badji had the best scoring chance at 40 minutes when he was threaded a pass and his low 18 yard shot up the middle hit the left post and deflected wide for a goalkick. Attendance was announced as 23383. That was pretty good for a weeknight game at the end of February in what could have been a very cold affair like the MLS Cup held here in December. Media announcements being made that limited tickets were still available may have killed off the walk up crowd. No tickets were sold in the North end stands. As this was a CONCACAF Championship game no national anthems were played, no team fireworks were let off, there was no halftime entertainment, the game sponsers and signboards were different, but there were team introductions made before the game. It had been a sunny day with temperatures reaching 13C and only dropping to 6C forecast by the end of the game. I didn't even bother to crack open my handwarmers to put inside my mitts. Last Tuesday in Colorado, records were set for the coldest game involving MLS teams in league history. Folks like me thought Toronto would set that dubious record when the draw was made. TFC would hold no advantage over the Rapids involving the weather. Only bow to the weather tonight was both teams had left the field before the end of the 30 minute warm up period and players lined up for introductions with their warm up jackets still on. Well it won't exactly be warm next week in the next round against Tigres from Mexico. Before that though, TFC kicks off their 2018 MLS season with their earliest home start—this Saturday afternoon against Columbus Crew. We were advised to get here early for the 'championship ceremonies'. I was surprised by the good fight that the Rapids put up. They have a new head coach and from what I've read many new players. Zac MacMath earned the shutout for them. I was slightly surprised that he got the start over US national team goalie and designated player Tim Howard but he was sharp with some running outside the box to clear potential through balls and a few good stops. TFC entered the game with a huge 2-0 away win against the Rapids which tied last season for the MLS team with the lowest goals scored—31 goals in 34 games. Rapids earned one of the four USA spots by being runner up in the MLS Western Conference in the 2016 season and since FC Dallas finished first AND won the US Open Cup, they selected the next best team. Their 2017 season was the reverse as they finished second from the bottom. TFC earned their spot by winning the Canadian Championship in a four game campaign in two rounds against first Ottawa Fury of the USL then Montreal Impact. This year the championship has expanded to six teams with the champion team from League 1 Ontario and the PLSQ of Quebec but FC Edmonton of the NASL folded. The MLS teams once again gets a bye until the semi-final. 2019 will bring Canadian Premier League teams into the mix. As soon as the game ended we were told that tickets were on sale for next Wednesday night, the next round and the opponent will be Tigres UANL from Mexico. I didn't realize their deciding game was also tonight. They beat Herediano of Costa Rica 3-1 in the Tigres home leg to win their series by a 5-3 aggregate. TFC will have to play better than tonight to beat Tigres. With the first leg being held in Toronto, TFC will almost certainly have to win that game to have a chance of advancing against probably another Mexican opponent—Club America. I wasn't bothered that TFC didn't score. I expected that they might start out conservative to protect their lead from giving up an away goal and they'd get their chances when the Rapids had to open up in the second half to catch up their deficit. TFC couldn't make their chances count. Sebastian Giovinco sent his freekicks into the player wall (47 minutes), punched away by goalie Zac MacMath (66 minutes), shot wide (77 minutes and shot into the left outside webbing of the net) or chipped into the box for charging TFC players to head or shoot over the bar (Chris Mavinga in second half stoppage time). I expect he will get better as the season wears on. Just like the game in Colorado, midfielder Jonathan Osorio was the only Canadian to start. Forward Jordan Hamilton and defender Ashtone Morgan were the only Canadians on the bench and they didn't get into the game. Hamilton saw injury time minutes last week replacing Jozy Altidore. Altidore was down at 24 minutes with what I thought was a kick in the ankle but I read later that he was throwing up. He and Giovinco looked better later in the game as the Rapids opened up which set up some counterattack runs. Victor Vazquez continued to take all the cornerkicks as he took over last season from Giovinco. TFC subs were all brought in late starting at 72 minutes with newest signing, Spanish midfielder Ager Aketxe replaced Marky Delgado, defender Chris Mavinga replacing Drew Moor at 82 minutes, and midfielder Nicolas Hasler replacing Jonathan Osorio. Newcomer Auro Jr from Brazil listed as a forward but played as a defender with many runs up the right wing.
