DeFregger's strike leads Rochester over shorthanded TFCII

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Stefan DeFregger broke through in the 58th minute to help lift the Rochester Rhinos
to a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC II at Capelli Sport Stadium on Wednesday. The Rhinos controlled
the run of play after Toronto defender Brandon Onkony was issued a straight red card in the 27th
minute and improved to 7-3-8 (29pts) with the victory. Substitute Jordan Dover swung
in a dangerous cross that nearly found the head of a diving Darius Madison and ultimately deflected
in off a Toronto defender for the goal that put the result out of doubt. Despite an impressive
defensive performance down a man, TFCII has now dropped six consecutive road games and stands
at 3-10-5 (14pts) on the season.

Scoring:
58’ – ROC – Stefan DeFregger (Kenardo Forbes)
76’ – ROC – Own Goal (Julian Dunn)

Three Things That Matter:
•1. The opening minutes featured a Toronto FC II side that was on the front foot and keen on testing
Rhinos keeper Dan Lynd early, attempting three of its seven shots on the night inside the
first 20 minutes. The red card to Onkony – who was dismissed for denying a clear goal-scoring
opportunity for Rhinos forward Darius Madison – changed the tide however as Rochester went
on to enjoy nearly two-thirds of the possession for the match while outshooting TFCII, 14-4,
after the visitors were reduced to 10 men.

•2. The opportunity to work in space was a welcome one for a Rochester attack that has been hampered
by the lack of a consistent scoring touch. DeFregger worked two solid chances in the moments
immediately following the dismissal of Onkony but sent both wide. On his first shot of the second
half though, DeFregger pounced on a slotted through ball from Forbes and fired past Toronto keeper
Mark Pais for his first goal of the season. With Dover’s cross leading to a second tally, Rochester
broke a string of 12 consecutive games in which the squad had finished with one goal or less.

•3. Always one of the toughest teams to beat at home leaguewide, the Rhinos improved to 6-1-3
at Capelli Sport Stadium this season with the result but now face a crucial stretch of three away
matches in-a-row. Bob Lilley’s squad will travel to Cincinnati next week (July 29) before visiting
a New York Red Bulls II (August 5) side it has not lost to in franchise history and wrapping up with
a trip to Harrisburg (August 8). With the four teams separated by just seven points following
Wednesday’s result, Rochester will hope the goal-scoring touch makes the road trip as well as the
Rhinos have managed just four goals in seven matches away from home since opening the campaign
with a 3-2 victory over Bethlehem.
