Montreal Tallies Late for Fourth Straight Win 08/28/2016, 6:15pm EDT By CHARLIE CORR - charlie.corr@uslsoccer.com Jarras nets 86th-minute winner as Montreal tops TFCII in I-401 Derby VAUGHAN, Ontario – FC Montreal overcame two deficits and earned a 4-3 victory against Toronto FC II on Sunday in this season’s final edition of the I-401 Derby at the Ontario Soccer Centre. Heikel Jarras’ 86th-minute goal put Montreal up at the close to help Montreal earn its fourth consecutive win – a club record. The winner stemmed from a steal around midfield as Marco Dominguez pushed up and the second-half sub Jarras curved a right-footed shot into the far right side of the frame. Louis Beland-Goyette, Anthony Jackson-Hamel and Alessandro Riggi netted the other goals for Montreal. Toronto’s Ricardo John, who signed with the club in early August, had an impressive debut with two goals and Martin Davis also added a score for TFCII. Montreal improves to 6-18-1 (19 points) overall and 4-9-1 on the road. Toronto falls to 6-16-5 (23 points) overall and 3-7-3 at home as TFCII has dropped four straight. The combined seven goals for the game and five goals in the opening half were both season highs at the Ontario Soccer Centre. This was the third and final regular-season meeting of the season. Toronto defeated Montreal 2-1 on April 9 and the sides drew 1-1 on June 15. Normally the fireworks at the Ontario Soccer Centre have been designated for the closing minutes this season, but the opening 10 minutes on Sunday featured some high-octane scoring with three goals. Toronto started things off with some strong horizontal passing in the fifth minute with Mo Babouli crossing from the right to Anthony Osorio on the left. Osorio’s low cross back in trickled through traffic and Martin Davis stuck his foot at the ball around the edge of the six to net his first professional goal in the fifth minute for a 1-0 Toronto lead. Montreal’s response was exceptional as Aron Mkungilwa crossed in from the right. TFCII’s Wesley Charpie had the header clearance, but it wasn’t enough as Louis Beland-Goyette lined up a shot from 20 yards out, firing a rocket that Toronto goalkeeper Clint Irwin got a right glove to, but only partially deflected it as Montreal tied the score at 1-1 in the sixth. Then in the 10th minute, TFCII regained the lead on a set piece, with Raheem Edwards’ free kick connecting with Skylar Thomas on the left. Thomas headed the ball across to Ricardo John, who signed with the club in early August. John, making his professional debut, headed it home for his first tally and a 2-1 advantage. •2. Montreal gained the momentum late in the first half with an equalizer and go-ahead score just before the whistle with Anthony Jackson-Hamel notching his seventh goal in 10 games to tie the score at 2-2 in the 43rd minute – a tight-angled shot from the right side of the box. Early into stoppage time, Montreal grabbed its first lead when Philippe Lincourt-Joseph patiently worked the ball to the left, dished to Alessandro Riggi and he rushed past the Toronto defense and slotted home the goal for a 4-3 advantage. Montreal and Toronto combined for five goals in the opening half, the most tallies for a half of football at the Ontario Soccer Centre. •3. Veteran goalkeeper and Tulsa, Okla., native Irwin manned the net for Toronto on Sunday as he continues his rehab from a quad injury that occurred in June. He certainly had a busy afternoon of work Sunday. The Toronto FC goalkeeper, who spent several seasons with MLS’s Colorado Rapids, made his first USL appearance since the 2012 season when he played for the Charlotte Eagles. Irwin became the seventh goalkeeper utilized by TFCII this season. Irwin was replaced in the 65th minute by Nathan Ingham.
