Cincinnati Strikes Late to Defeat Toronto 04/24/2016, 6:15pm EDT By NICHOLAS MURRAY - nicholas.murray@uslsoccer.com Cummings’ first goal for the club proves decisive in 2-1 victory VAUGHN, Ontario – Omar Cummings’ first goal for FC Cincinnati earned his side a dramatic late victory against Toronto FC II on Sunday afternoon as they visitors took a 2-1 win to hand the hosts their first defeat of the season. Cummings scored with six minutes to go, as Cincinnati earned its third win of the season. Cincinnati (3-2-0, 9pts) almost got off to a flying start, as Sean Okoli sent a volley over the crossbar within the opening minute. Toronto’s first chance arrived soon after when Jay Chapman cut inside his man and shot from 25 yards, but the effort was comfortably saved by Cincinnati goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt. The visitors threatened again soon after, as a cross from the left found Andrew Weideman, but the forward’s header flicked just wide of the right post. Corben Bone also had a good effort from distance that slide wide as Cincinnati looked to press home their early territorial advantage. Toronto (1-1-2, 5pts) found success down the left side as Ashtone Morgan almost found Shaan Hundal with a low cross at the near post that Cincinnati’s defense cleared well, while Cincinnati threatened as a shot by Jimmy McLaughlin went wide of the target. TFC II took the lead moments before the break as a fine long pass forward by Chris Manella found Raheem Edwards breaking into the left channel. The young forward shrugged off his defender, and sent a low finish past Hildebrandt for his fourth goal of the season. Cincinnati came out with a lot of energy to start the second half, and Kenney Walker had a shot well saved by Quillan Roberts off a shot from the edge of the penalty area after a half-cleared corner kick. Weideman then managed to round Roberts at an acute angle on the right side of the penalty area, but Skylar Thomas turned the low shot behind for a corner. Toronto created a chance through Chris Manella, who had a good long effort that went wide of the left post from 30 yards, but Cincinnati’s pressure paid off on the hour-mark as Wiedeman found the equalizer. After a good piece of work by McLaughlin, his cross was controlled and stroked home at the back post for Weideman's second goal of the season. Both teams looked for the go-ahead goal, and Toronto had a good spell of pressure with 20 minutes to go that Cincinnati defended well to keep the hosts from a good look at goal. Cincinnati then threatened with eight minutes to go as a free kick was flicked on at the near post, and Okoli had his finish turned wide by Roberts. Toronto almost took the lead moments later as Salvador Bernal hit a turning volley that was palmed away by Hildebrandt, who then recovered in time to keep Bubacarr Jobe’s diving header on the rebound out of the net as well with another spectacular save. Hildebrandt’s efforts came into even greater focus a minute later when Cincinnati took the lead on Cummings’ first goal for the club with a low finish that almost emulated Wiedeman's finish earlier in the half. The visitors then controlled the rest of the contest, as it salted away the remaining time to pick up a vital victory.
